Joe Flanagan Posted March 26, 2011 Author Report Posted March 26, 2011 Thanks Tom. I still have to tweak the hood but it will have to wait for tomorrow. Quote
40phil41 Posted March 26, 2011 Report Posted March 26, 2011 That looks great. Brings back fond memories of when I re-assembled my '40. Of course I also scratched the new paint but it doesn't hurt as much now Phil Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 26, 2011 Report Posted March 26, 2011 Put the hood on today and fastened various bolts connecting the inner fenders to the outers. Here are some pictures: Looks like the dog dont give a ship! Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 26, 2011 Report Posted March 26, 2011 Joe the car looks great, nice color, and good work. Get her back together, and get her burning gas on the road. That's what these cars are meant for...... Quote

greg g Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 The dog is upset about a couple of gaps, he has of couse heard of the front sheetmetal referred to as a Dog house and he wants it just so... So back to work Joe!!! Looks very nice. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 27, 2011 Author Report Posted March 27, 2011 I think it was just the UPS truck that had driven by. She wasn't expecting a package, as far as I know. She just hates the UPS guy. Quote
T120 Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 . She just hates the UPS guy. ...So does my wife. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 Looks great Joe. Can you post pictures of what it looked like when you started? Jim Yergin Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 27, 2011 Author Report Posted March 27, 2011 I hate to say this, Jim, but when I started, digital cameras were not around. I'd have to scan some snapshots, which I'll do at work next week. Quote
PatS.... Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 Joe, based on what you started with and where you are working...nothing short of miraculous as far as I'm concerned. The dog is barking to the neighbors to come have a look at his new ride!!! Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 Congratulations, Joe. Such a nice feeling to be bolting stuff back together and when nearly every work session it looks more and more like a car! Quote
maine48ply Posted March 27, 2011 Report Posted March 27, 2011 Joe, you've made a car! Have you been using all authentic looking fasteners and rubber bumpers (hood to fender) and welting and other stuff like that? I am a little worried about all the spare time you'll have soon....any plans? Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 27, 2011 Author Report Posted March 27, 2011 Thanks for the good words. I'm using new fasteners that look like the original. Stainless bolts where they'll show, like under the hood. I have my original rubber hood bumpers but I think I'll get replacements from Steele or someone. The splash guard material that goes on the inner fender wells I replaced with vinyl from Home Depot. Just cut it into the appropriate length strips and stapled it through the sheet metal where the original material was. That's going to take some tweaking and will probably have me swearing like a sailor (Wait, I already swear like a sailor). The beaded welting that goes between the rear fenders and the body you can get from the usual vendors. Spare time? I won't have to worry about that for a long time. I still have a lot of work to do on this car. Also, in about four years my wife and I will be selling our house and leaving the DC area. I probably have two years' worth of house projects to do. Spare time? What's that? Quote
windsor8 Posted March 28, 2011 Report Posted March 28, 2011 Looks great. Hopefully my 48 will be looking similar in a week or so. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 Just thought I'd post a few pictures from the dark old days: Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 And a few more: Here's a picture of rust-through on the lip below the trunk. I had just sandblasted it before this picture: This is the same area after welding the holes up with my MIG and grinding: Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 28, 2011 Author Report Posted March 28, 2011 And still more: Like lots of these cars, the spare tire well was rotted out. I cut out the bad section and fabricated a new one: The finished product: Quote
