That running motor is music to my ears! Great job Joe.

I sent Hank 5 or 6 sets (3 springs per set) of stainless steel throttle linkage springs to sell a while back that were made to the original specifications. PM him if you're interested.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been pretty focused on the truck the past few weeks. I try to do something every night even if its something as minor as putting the antenna in. I have the floor boards in all the way. I had to make a new panel that goes near the steering column, the one with the three sheet metal screws. I made it larger so fit around the pedals so the draft seals will work better. I have all the dash switches installed and all is working and good. I took the brake drums off to see how the shoes are wearing, and made a few minor adjustments, but since doing that I have noticed that my passenger side rear brake is leaking somewhere now...go figure. I fitted the drivers side door and have got 80% of the body work done on it. This door was horrible! When I bought the truck the door would barely touch the door seal (an inch gap on at the back of the cab). When I stripped it down is saw why. Now I have it fitting nicely all around, leverage is your friend. I bought a cheap antenna from NAPA yesterday and installed it. It will work for now. I also started working on the bed. I did the rust repair on the front panel. The lower lip that supports the floor was rotted off, so I put new steel in. I've got a few other small parts done as well.

Here before and now for the door, as you can see it was pretty bad. I bought a cheap slide hammer for pull it out and it worked well. Also a picture of the antenna and one of the front lower panel I forgot to put in. I had to take out the heavy bracket that bolts to the core support that supports the front panel and fender...stupid mistakes. I'm sure I'm not the only one that made this mistake though....I hope not at least!

Times a tickin for the WPC meet I want to get the truck to! Regardless I'll be there with my truck or with the 41 DeSoto. Maybe I'll get to meet some of you there. I'm staying in the Holiday Inn coming in Thursday night.

Time to get back out there to block the door some more!

That antenna looks like the same one I bought from napa. It didn't last long. I now have one of these on my plymouth. Took a fair amount of research at the time to actually find one that collapses flush so I can use my car cover.

Yeah, the meet in MN, either going to trailer the truck or drive the DeSoto. They might both be going if my dad can get the time off work.

Thanks for the info on the antenna. The one I bought seems very cheap, it was only $7, so I guess what can you expect. I'll probably be ordering the one you posted in the future. The original antenna for mine is too far gone to use.

Looks really good, nice truck. The old flatty sounds pretty good in the video.

Thanks! Still have some bugs to work out with how its running and with the exhaust leak you can hear in the video but its getting there.

Nice work on the door!

I spent all evening on the door tonight and I feel like I got nowhere. I didn't notice a low spot until I blocked it tonight, so trying to get that out. Not sure how I missed it. It will get painted this week and on the truck this weekend.

Thast's the reason for blocking it.  I'm on my third round of blocking on my grille, another coat primer before wetsanding, 2 coats of color, blocking again, final color and clear   then cut and buff

well then, regardless if I bring FEF to the show (any word Ed on the entrance fee stuff?) I'll have to meet up with you!

We don't have a plymouth club meeting until mid March. Thats the first time I'll see any of the guys that are in both groups.

The pricing is here in the registration form:  http://www.chryslerclub.org/PDF%20files/2013_National_Registration.pdf

Looks like $40 to register a car/truck. A little high just for showing a few hours, but you could also go for the awards banquet in the evening with the registration fee. I will be in the DeSoto side for the banquet for at least the meal which is supposed to be one room over from the Chrysler club, but will try to get in the Chrysler side if I bring my truck. The last Desoto convention I made it to was around 2002 or 2003 in to Rapid City, SD. We drove our 60 Desoto, quite an eventful trip.

Joe the question is if you have to join the club in ADDITION to paying the fees for the show....that'd be a double wammy just for a single day show

I looked into it a little, and it appears that you need to be a member to show your truck in the show. The more we are talking at my house, the more it sounds like we are only taking one car. We all can't fit in the truck, so we will be traveling in our 41 Desoto!

I've been busy this past week. I finished the other door and its on now. It came out great, no complains aside from a little dirt in the paint, but hey, you can't have everything...especially in my dirty garage. I've been messing around with my original dash knobs. They actually cleaned up pretty well on the buffing wheel. I carefully taped them off and sprayed some fresh black paint. I tried to do the white lettering and ended up ruining all my work on the black paint. Looks like attempt number two is in the future. I also picked up a near perfect dial half (the part you see in the dash) to the radio in my truck on ebay for a very good price. I have a model 820 in my truck. I found a guy that I'm going to have restore it for a reasonable price compared to others radio restoration guys I found. He is also adding an iPod jack in it too. I will be sending that in a few weeks. I am still waiting for the radio in the mail. I guess that's about it for now. Next is finishing the hood and the bed. I also want to get going on finishing  the turn directional wiring this week, but we will see if that happens. I also need to put the front fender back on too, but I'm going to tackle my coolant leak first to avoid reaching over it and scratching it.

My knobs were black also. I put a long bolt into each knob, then a lock nut against the knob. Then I put my drill motor in the vice, put a knob in the chuck and I had a small lathe. With the knob turning I took a fine grit sand paper and slowly took off the old paint. Some of my knobs were silver some were brass. I put the brass knobs on the truck and stored the silver ones.

SInce you have to repaint, this is an easy way, just go slow.

I used a buffing wheel to clean them up. It worked great with the bright work. The brass looked so good buffed I would have left it, but just like yours, I had a chrome one too. My panel knob is chromed, so paint I went.

I got the dash unit for radio in the mail today, and for fun thought I'd try it all out. I ran jumper cables to the set up and plugged it all in and got nothing. I noticed all the tubes were not lighting up, so I cleaned all of them up and put them back. I tried again and got some cracking noises through the speaker with all the tubes glowing. So I cleaned it up a bit more and fooled with the antenna and with a little tuning I found a station playing music. I couldn't believe it. When I bought the truck a squire must have made its house on the speaker half of the radio which has all the tubes. It was full of hair and acorn shells. Now I just need to send it to the guy that is going to go through it and add an iPod hook up. I'll be cruising with some tunes.

How did you find modern music on AM??

LOL, funny that you ask. Its not the "coolest" but there is a local radio Disney kid's AM station. I found it one day in my Corvair. It comes in strong normally, but in the closed garage it comes in weak. I can also get a good country station with my cars outside of the garage. They come out of Ontario Canada.

Isn't a good country station an oxymoron?

Do any of you know if the tailgate hinges VPW sells will work for our beds. I haven't called to ask them, I thought I'd ask here first. Also, has anyone bought the reproduction window crank handles from them? Hinges on page 88 in the link: http://www.vintagepowerwagons.com/pdf/parts/18body.pdf

I tore into my bed today, and it looks like I'll be pretty busy with them with all the rust repair. They are a little worse than I thought. I've never really taken a close look at the bed sides until today. I removed the fenders (they have seen MUCH better days...) and removed all the other "farmer" added options such as bailing wire fender supports and bailing wire to hold the tail gate chain, and the homemade spare tire carrier on the bed side. I also admire the brush painted bed! I have them ready to head to the acid dippers to make sure all the rust is out of all the areas I can't get to by sandblasting. I am a little worried about it having effect on the paint from stories I've heard, but I'm going to try it. I'm hoping to have the hood painted within a week and get my coolant leak fixed. I ordered a new water pump. I have all my gauges hooked up and all the wiring is done for now. I ordered a 6v to 12 + ground converter yesterday so I can add a charger for my ipod and cell phone so I can listen to music with driving. At the pace I've been working, the truck should be on the road for summer I hope! Just need to stay motivated and get it done!
