Rodney Bullock Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 You guy's are on the wild side:rolleyes: with the jellie and all. Chris and Jerry, You guy's had a chance to ride in a mercury bodied T I have heard of those but never had I rode in one, good for you. As I said earlier in my post these guy's are restorers, welding that rim was childs play for them. I guess the guy at that body shop would not let you fix that rim as you would have done a much better job then he. I wish you guy's had more time with us.I would have liked to have taken you down to my garage and gave you a tour. Tim take care of these guy's I know you have a rim and please make sure they have oil in the trans case PLEASE! Quote

PatS.... Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 You'd probably get locked up for bringing that stuff up your way, Rockwood. Not a problem...he has a KEY to get out! Quote

Not much beats a road trip in an old car. Glad you had a good visit. I'm envious too. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Mums started the visit with combo club sandwiches..we went to the shop from there. Doing the deed on the wheel, mounting the new tire and balancing the unit. Everything in place and tied down against the elements..they are ready to hit the road and continue thier adventure.. Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 So you made them mount the tire and you did not even paint the rim? Did you have to educate them on the correct way to mount the tire? I see the spot near the stem. Quote
greg g Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Hey Adams, thought a guy with an airforce background would have helped then shape ther overhead into a bit more of an aerodynamic profile.... And what up with the Omnirizon???? Peugot or VW???? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Good eye Don...yes I did make that point...the rim was dressed on the inside real good with the power wire brush, then coated with EXTEND rust convertor to protect against future corrosion....No..did not paint the outer rim but they got a genuine 4 weight static balance. I'll put this up against anything on the market except spin on the car balance..like the old Hunter system..and yes I have that capability along with strobe balance if needed..I hope the rim serves them well, the hubcap clips are all intact also..this was an odd man out 16 I had here that I would never have used anyway....my small contribution to the adventure.. Plymouthy Adams Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 blaspheny..you'll smoke a turd in hades for that...no VW or Pigout here..genuine last production run of the Omni with fuel injection...I am on the lookout for a 5 spped to get the pedal etc out of..I have a 525 here at the house..the 413 automatic is fantastic tranny..but in a 5 speed attire..they are awesome road commuters.. I had one of the first generation Horizons..though the blocks were purchased from VW to get the project into production quicker..that is where the simularities ended...the first thing Mopar did was line bored the bottom end and put a real crank shaft in the engine..they are nothing like a Rabbit and for those who have ever worked on a Rabbit..enough said...I helped a bud with a Rabbit once...swore I would never touch another..nothing was accessable..I view the engine bay as a rolling platform for demostrating a thermite gernade.. Quote
greg g Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 My jetta doesn't like you much. I had a 77 Rabbit for Ice racing. It was the 1500 carbed model, with the auto. Thing was stupid fast on the ice. Even faster that the capri v6 and buick v6 powered Saab 96's a couple of guys were running. they couldn't believe how the thing went. Next season there were 4 other guys running them 2 with autos and 2 with 4 speeds. For some reason mine was still 1 lap faster than the others. Had 3 or 4 Rabbits, a Scirroco and now the Jetta, never had a bad one. Used to regularly run the ice racer up to 7K, ran it for 3 years before a clod of frozen slush got between the timing belt and the lower pully. Other thing I wonder about is if that FI system might be adapted to our flat 6. It is only a simple feed back system or did that one get 02 sensors??? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 did not say they were bad...just bad to work on....and you mentioning the Scirroco...yes..worked on one of them also....someone had cross threaded a plug and I worked a bit of magic there...now them pups were quite quick.. I feel if I were to attemp the upgrade to fuel injection on our L6's....I would investigate the use of the 3.5 LHS platform as my baseline..It would be quite an undertaking.. Quote
PatS.... Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 blaspheny..you'll smoke a turd in hades for that...no vw or pigout here... LOL!!! Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted February 10, 2011 Author Report Posted February 10, 2011 Hello all, Day 5, Vidalia GA to Panama City FL, 357 miles today, 1,263 total. What a great visit with Tim and the Lady Adams. That gal sure makes a fine club sandwich. As we were fixing to leave, they offered to put us up for the night and we could make an early start tomorrow — when he described her omelettes, it was all we could do to climb back in the old tub and press on. We liked leaving Vidalia so much we did it twice. Some gas stations in the US need a zip code to pay at the pumps. As we Canadians are not equipped with zips, I gave my Visa to the gal at the Shell before we filled up. Thinking I had already paid (actually, not really thinking at all) we gassed up and drove off towards Tim's place. About 15 miles down the road Jerry made some comment about gas stations and it struck me that I never got my card back. Or signed the sales slip either. Back we went and the gal pulled my card and the paperwork out from the cash drawer with a smile and good wishes for the rest of our trip. That Tim sure has a lot of interesting projects on the go, and a very well equipped shop to do the work. He's not just a first-rate car guy either — much of his last year or more has been occupied with renovating and expanding their 100-year-old house. This is no easy task, I know. We live in a 99-year-old house that my bride dearly wishes I would spend time on instead of all that garage work I love so much. Anyway, we really enjoyed our tour of the cars, the house, and the shops and were delighted with the excellent wheel Tim gave us (I tried to pay but he was very uncooperative). We threw our welded-rim spare up on the car-top carrier and put the Tim-Rim with a patched tube and new tire in the back seat — we've learned not to pack our spare tires out of easy reach. About 15 minutes over the state line we heard a hissing sound from the back seat. Apparently the Georgia air in that tube wanted to experience Florida first hand. Aarrrgggghhhh! Tomorrow we find a local tire shop and try to mount the tire as a tubeless and re-repair the tube to carry as a spare. Tire troubles are a hassle but it could be much worse — bearings, tow trucks, collisions, bandits, vandals... Tomorrow is a big day for us — we go just a couple miles further south on US 231 and when we turn right on US 98 we're heading home! We plan to follow 98 and/or the coast road all the way to Mobile. If all goes well we'll be in Mississippi or even Louisiana by nightfall. Pictures: I don't know where he finds the time to post 10K on the Forum with everything else he's doing; At work on the tube; Hey Jerry, I think we're in Georgia; Is there anybody working here?; 'Cause I sure would like some of that 37¢ gas! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 dang the luck..I now wished we had put that new tube I had in that tire..split are tough to patch.. Quote
busycoupe Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 I love the pics of the old gas station! I wonder if the pump has been sitting there set at 37 cents since the seventies, or if someone was playing with it. It looks like you are having a trip of the lifetime! Good luck! I'm looking forward to your next report. Dave (In frozen Massachusetts) Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Yes fantastic reading, great pics, and sure envy you boys on this trip. I also envy the fact you were able to drop in on Tim Adams, first thing I would do on a trip to Georgia......Fred Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted February 10, 2011 Author Report Posted February 10, 2011 Hello all, Day 6, Panama City to Tallahassee and home for me, and back to Elko GA for Jerry and the Dodge. I'm afraid my elderly Mum took a bad turn last night. She fell ill the day we left Virginia and we've been keeping in touch with home ever since. Now it looks like I need to get home pronto. Jerry just dropped me at the Tallahassee airport and is driving up to Elko where Tim Adams has kindly offered to throw the old heap into a shed until we're ready to resume the journey. Jerry will make his way home from Atlanta soon after. The kindness and generosity of Forum members has been just great, especially with Jim Yergin storing the car for the winter and now Tim keeping it safe until whenever (hopefully not too long, or we're liable to come back and find it sporting a Dakota front clip, power windows, solid floors, shiny paint...). Many thanks to all for your encouragement and assistance. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Chris, So sorry to hear about your mother. Hopefully she will be better soon and you can resume your trip. Jim Yergin Quote
