1molly1950 Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 I recently aquired a completely origional 1950 Plymouth that was run without oil. Other than the fact that the engine doesn't work the car is amazing! everything is original, I even have the owners maual, origional key case, and lst smog check. The car (harvey) lived with the same family in a garage in oregon, found the car on ebay. The cranks shaft and the pistions have to be restored and then she should be ready to go. Does anyone know where I can find a cranks shaft kit, and a piston kit for a 1950 Plymouth. The mechanics said if I could find the kits, it would lower the bill since they wouldn't have to charge me for looking for parts. Thanks a million, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Molly Quote
Young Ed Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Both the pistons rings and bearings are available from napa along with many other sources. I think if that were me and I couldn't do the work myself I'd have those mechanics pull the engine and drop it off at a machine shop for inspection and work. You won't know what size bearings or pistons until its been opened up and inspected. There are many other things that could be found to be good or bad. Have they tried to turn it over or inspected it in any way? Quote

greg g Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 If you go to the host page of this forum you will find a vendors and suppliers list. I got my rebuild parts through Egge and Terrel machine. Both are listed there. but as noted you should have the block measured to determine what sized rebuildig parts will be needed. If it got hot enough to sieze the it would alos be wise to check the cylinder head for warpage. Just throwing new parts at it may prove to be more expensive in the long run. Another option is to look in the classifieds here and on ebay craigslist etc, You may be able to pick up a running engine for not much money and swap it for the one in the car. This would allow you to drive and enjoy the car while the origial engine is assessed machined and rebuilt. It was very common for these cars to recieve engine swaps to keep them ont he road. I believe I just saw a listing for a running engine and transmission for 250 dollars somewhere. Welcome, hope you get to enjoy Harvey shortly. Quote

Alshere59 Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 Another engine may be a good idea as suggested by the other posters. Location would be good to know as shipping is expensive and someone on the forum may be able to help you out.. City, state should do it. Quote
