41/53dodges Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 i got my engine from merle today (thank you), got the ignition working, rebuilt the carb, and now i realized the oil sump is at the wrong end, the front. i need it at the rear. what do i need to do to correct this? a new oil pan is in order for sure, it has the dipstick in pan. what else? Quote
Dan Babb Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 I have an extra oil pan (came with a box of parts when I bought my truck). Yours for cost of shipping if you want it. Quote
41/53dodges Posted January 9, 2011 Author Report Posted January 9, 2011 really, what does it look like? (besides like an oil pan!) could you post a pic or two for me? in the meantime, i dont think i have that type laying around, so i may need it. Quote
Dan Babb Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 No problem...I'll get a picture tomorrow for you. It doesn't look damaged at all. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 Couldn't you use the pan, oil pickup, and dipstick from the old engine that came out of the truck? It was good to meet you yesterday, Josh. Always fun to meet forum members. Merle Quote
41/53dodges Posted January 9, 2011 Author Report Posted January 9, 2011 i think it has the dipstick in-block if i remember correctly. the one i got from you has it on the pan. and quite the same to you! i always enjoy meeting somebody face-to-face. you are actually the first forum member i have met personally. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 Josh I am going to have to do the same thing for the pilot house engine I have(also from Merle). The block should still be drilled for the dipstick tube and you should be able to transfer everything over. I've never seen a rear sump oilpan with the dipstick in the pan. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 There should be a plug in the block's dipstick hole right next to the oil filter lines. The dipstick tube should pull out of your old block and fit into the "new" engine once you remove the plug. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 On my 1939 dodge car engine the dipstick fits directly into the block - no tube . So there is another variation too . Quote
41/53dodges Posted January 10, 2011 Author Report Posted January 10, 2011 okay, now just for the pickup tube. does this one just turn, or do i have to transplant one? Quote
Dan Babb Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 Here's a picture of the extra pan I have. But I think this is a front sump pan too. If you really need a rear sump, couldn't you bring the pan to a good welder...have him cut off the bottom and weld it back in place with the sump at the rear? If he's really good, it should come out looking fine and not like a hack job. Quote
41/53dodges Posted January 12, 2011 Author Report Posted January 12, 2011 that would be a front sump, thanks anyways. i could do that if i understood exactly what you were suggesting. for right now, i am debating using the truck's old one if i can find it. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 sooo, in talking with Ed about my pending sump switch, the subject of dipsticks came up....seems I need to put a plug in the hole where mine is now (see Merle's picture below) so I can use the "proper" one like pictured in Dan's photos? I also remember the thread talking about the handles being different between the years...what would be the right one for a '51? Merle, what is that plug/would be an easy and "proper" looking plug to stick in? At least with the right dipstick location it won't be a matter of trying to not get oil all over stuff when checking the oil! Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 It's just a standard cup plug, Mark. Measure the hole diameter and ask your local part's counter guy for a cup style welch plug that size. I've probably got one for you at my work, but I won't be there this week to check. Merle Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Here's the plug I removed from the engine I got from Merle. Merle your name is just all over this project.......... Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Kinda hard to make out but the sump came out in 2 pieces and the floating "head" is held on with a bent over nail. The person who last worked on this engine seems to have gone out of their way to not sure correct fastners. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Oh and my oil that was in the engine for maybe 5minutes run time came out looking very blue and discusting. Not sure where the blue came in..... Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 "Oh and my oil that was in the engine for maybe 5minutes run time came out looking very blue and discusting. Not sure where the blue came in....." Perhaps it was his way of "Blueprinting" the engine? Jeff Quote

48Dodger Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Might be the cleaners you used? Oil will react with different cleaning agents and turn purple or blue.....doesn't happen in every case... 48D Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Its been a while but I don't think I put any cleaners in there either. I did use 1-2 ancient cans(yes oil cans) of quaker state 30w non detergent. Oh well I was going to try and put it back in but I already dumped it and will put fresh in with the new pan. Glad to see at least there wasnt much at all for crud in the bottom of the pan. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 so you do have a use for that, how did you put it, "crappy pilot house stuff", once the sump is swapped! Quote
Young Ed Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 so you do have a use for that, how did you put it, "crappy pilot house stuff", once the sump is swapped! Just because its on your truck doesn't make it a pilot house parts. Those parts will just be going back to a proper home. Quote
48Dodger Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 lol...I know you got some Pilot-House envy goin there Ed.....I've got another cab out this way, we could swap yours out...you know...let you keep the front clip of that 39-47 and just ease you into the post war era.... 48D Quote
