How many over the road trucks run 8 cylinders and why don't they? most have no clue. only been beat by one ford and the guy had about 10-15 times more money than i had in mine and he did not win buy much to warrant all that money in my opinion. greg g Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 Went to a cruise in Friday night. Trip was about 40 miles, ad some of it is 4 lane state highway. Was doing my usual indicated 65 highway speed, when up ahead I notices three other cruise in cars. A yellow 30 somethingmupliple carbureted v8, hot rot coupe, a 60 something V8 Comet, followed by a Cadillac hearse. Caught them and passed them on an up grade just cruising along. They all came around after we parked and got situated, when I opened the hood, they all looked in saw the flatty, and walked away mutterig amongst themselves. Apparetly they figured since I passed them so easily, I must have had something special under the hood. Apparently I do!! Followed a 40 Ford coupe out on the way home with a 8, don't know what it was cause he did not open his hood, but the city has a lot of hilly streets, he was holding me up climbing in third gear. Don;t underestimate your engine. Quote
48Dodger Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 350's are easy to work on????? It's only because there's a million of them laying on the side of the road, in every other garbage can, proping doors open and leveling trailer homes everywhere. Heck I have one as a paper wieght on my desk right now, not to mention the one my uncle jack uses as an anchor for his fishing boat! Mopar made the first 350 in 1958 as a big block "B" motor....share that info and watch a 'chevy" guy's head tilt and go "huh?" lol. Build your flathead with pride and with the knowledge that you are taking the path of a true hot rodder....a car/truck guy whose passion is driven by creativity. 48D Quote

tysouthwick Posted July 4, 2010 Author Report Posted July 4, 2010 I basicly had the same argument again. Holy crap hot rodders, Chevy guys are so unbelievably ignorant! I even told him some of the stuff you guys said and he still doesnt believe me! its like arguing with a 2 year old so I just ended the argument at chevys are belly button motors and the easiy way out of a restoration! And the funny part about this is I am 15 and he is in his mid 40's! and wont listen to anything I have to say about old cars because "Ive been in around them longer." if only there was some way to do a sarcastic impression over the internet... 40plyrod Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 I basicly had the same argument again. Holy crap hot rodders, Chevy guys are so unbelievably ignorant! I wouldn't go that far. Some guys just think they know it all, I'll bet there's ford guys that know nothing but fords and mopar guys that no nothing but mopars it's just what they're most familar with. I grew up mostly a chevy guy but always appreciated a nice car no matter the make same for the motor and in my 50 chevy pickup I put in a bigger newer inline six. the 235 six was probably more expensive to dress up nice and I could have bought two sbc intakes for the price of the one for the six nevermind the carb but when I pop the hood at a car show there's only ever been good comments. The main reason a lot of hot rodders put sbc in their cars is 350s are cheap, well supported by the aftermarket and can make pretty good horsepower stock and if that's what whoever wants to put in their hot rod so be it. For me there's just to many other more interesting choices and I'm not that concerned with the ability to shread a set of tires or pull stumps. If you want to run the stock flat six (and that would be my choice) do it they're a pretty reliable motor. It's your car listen to the advice of others you can always learn something(even if the only thing you gain from it is the knowedge that the guy spewing it is a jerk and doesn't know what he's talking about) and build your car the way you want. jd52cranbrook Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 Let's not let this get testy fellas. Everyone has a right to a opinion. In general I find that; Ford guys, Chevy guys, Mopar guys, rice burner guys, and on and on.... are just who they are. But there are not enough, car guys, and gals. who are just about the car, not the brand. Quote

Flatie46 Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 I have found in this hobby like many others you'll run it those people that, already know it all and you can't tell them a darned thing. When I do run into these close minded people I try to remeber no matter what I'm not gonna change a thing through discussion or argument because some believe they are right reguardless. I just let it ride and do my own thing. I have alota respect for the Mopar flat 6 for several reasons. The factory I work in had about ten '62 thru '70 Yale forklifts that were powered by this engine. I saw day in and day out the abuse, torcher and neglect they were put through. The only time the oil was rarley changed valves never adjusted no preventive maintenance at all. They took it in stride and were pretty darn reliable. There was one that had a rod knocking for years and people would get on it and try to rev it till the rod came out but it never did. Every day it'd crank right up and do it's job. Now how could you not have resepect for that? These engines tough and well engineered, with a little care and the proper maintenance you'll get more than your moneys worth. If your looking to have a pissing contest about horspower you need to find something else. I like 'em and respect 'em. Maybe you should have told your neighbor when it comes to the Mopar flat 6. If I have to explane, you wouldn't understand! That's my opinon, feel free to make it yours. Quote
PatS.... Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 I've never been a one brand only or never brand X person. I think most makes have their greats and their duds, Mopar included. As far as the know it all's go, I politely excuse myself and go on about my business and leave them to theirs. Arguing over which brand is better or who owns what company is a total waste of time. Life is hard. Even harder when you're stupid. Quote

Arguing over which brand is better or who owns what company is a total waste of time. Life is hard. Even harder when you're stupid. That's kinda where I'm at too. I have several different makes of cars, and have used a Pontiac 400 in a 46 Ford PU, and a 350 Chevy in a 50 Chevy, and I had every intention of using a 350 Chevy and doing a mild street rod on both the 46 Plymouth coupe, and the 49 Dodge pickup I am currently working on, as what I believed from the condition of both vehicles when I bought them was that the engines were probably shot. Turned out in both cases I was wrong, and the engines were about the best things on both, and they were simply in too good of condition as to not burning any oil/good compression, and they both started up with very little effort, after both having sat a number of years. Finding this to be the case it made sense to keep them original. As to what engine I might use in any vehicle, it mainly depends on what I have, what I know I can aquire as affordable, or can find that I feel is in good condition, and worth the money. Once they are in the vehicle one will send it down the road (albiet varying degrees of performance) about as good as another. Joel Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 I once (in the mid 70's) bought a 50 Pontiac that someone had cobbled a chevy V-8 into. I did drive it home but that was the last time I drove it. Sold it in short order. In high school I always wanted a 40 ford with a chevy V-8 in it. Actually I wanted anything with a V-8 in it. One of my buddies had a 55 chevy with a straight 6 in it. He had the engine all tricked out with multiple carbs and such. He won several races running against the v-8's. His motto was "never under estimate the power of a 6". I learned from his motto. Quote
JoelOkie Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 I have used straight 6's in my work trucks for years, for several reasons. They could be bought a little cheaper, the fuel economy, and they were easy to work on, and that includes 235's in Chevys which we plentiful on back when I first strated, then a run of Ford 300's. How any of them hold up depends on how they are driven and maintained. I switched to V-6 Chevy trucks 3 trucks ago, a 2002, a 2006, and now driving a 2008. The 08 one is the only one I have had any trouble at all, (spare tire fell off going down the road the 2nd week I had it), and a smog device related issue. I have just over 75k miles on the 08, so time will tell on it. Quote
