I have read a few threads where some of you have had problems with brake switch failure. I just put a new one in a few months ago and it has already stopped working. Is there anything that I could have done to cause this? Could a short in the wiring cause a failure. I'm wondering what I could do before I spend another $10 on a switch.

thanks for any input

shorts do one of two things on the average, pop a fuse, smoke a wire or drain a battery if low current short...opens however are failures to make connection...be sure you have power on the input of the switch by use of meter or test light and if you do, then you can just jumper across the brake light switch..if the lights work..bad switch (open) if they still do not light, be sure the power is now on the other terminal by testing with meter or test light..if so, continue to the rear sockets testing for power and ensure good clean grounds..

I've heard of people having issues with the hydraulic type switches, especially if using DOT5 brake fluid.

However I am running the switch that was in my car in 1973 when I got it. And when I was putting everything back together in 1998 I switched to DOT5, so I've got about 12 years on it after the change over.

Maybe I've been lucky, but no problems so far.

I got the switch from Napa and its got a warrenty. But, what's a low pressure switch Hank? I would like to bring some knowledge into the Napa store. I did replace all of my brake system and am running Dot5...very interesting!

Not sure where but if you search you are likely to come up with a thead where this same senario (switch after switch failure) was remedied by using a "low pressure switch" that's all I know about it.

Did a little looking and found a ron francis wiring that has a low pressure switch, though its a little expensive. I ordered another one from napa. I guess if that one fails I'll go with the low pressure one

thanks

Hey I was at NAPA fixin' to buy a spare brake light switch P/N SL133. Apparently it is no longer made but P/N SL134 is identical.

You guys might already know this.
