New dash knobs for a P-15?

I am thinking about getting some new dash Knobs. There is a seller on the bay who offers 5 sets of new knobs. Per the seller.....

"These knobs are an exact reproduction of the oem knobs. These knobs were made using a long process, to match the color exactly, the knobs color was made using the factory die codes."

Has anyone had any dealings with this seller? The price is way out of line in my opinion. I believe reproduction knobs can be purchased for less. Here is the link.

Don, I know it seems like a lot of money but it is getting harder to find decent used ones. A lighter on ebay just went for $88 and that is cheap these days. I imagine the person buying it bought it for the knob as the elements are readily available. There is likely a lot of work and initial preparation that goes into these knobs so I think, although expensive, it is probably worth it if you can't find any cheaper. I do not know the seller and don't need any knobs myself but am just stating my opinion..........for what it's worth and it may not be worth much!:P

Don, & others

I have had the below website bookmarked for several months. Sounds interesting and it might be the answer you are looking for.

I have NOT done business with him as yet.

Good luck in your search.

that is true and I have said that on more than one occasion..I have also said that Tim don't play well with others also..I agree with Don..the initial cost of the dies should have been long recovered for the knobs..but then I have never been in the casting of plastic business so don't have antything to draw to..outside of the actual restoration for points, the price on these to the average man on the street with a daily is the driving force to go billet...

so it still boils down to the fact...what are you willing to pay...if not the going rate then time may be on your side and you slowly collect a set here and there..I see them from time to time yet..there was a set for 35.00 at a not to far back swap meet..not a bad price for a decent set of used originals..until competetion arrives on the scene with a number of makers of these items..the price will stay high...it is the small stuff like this that makes a trophy winner next to the car that "just showed"

It's too bad the cost of NOS and reproduction parts is so expensive .I can see where it might discourage someone entering the hobby or completing a project as the cost can get out of hand.Maybe this has led to the "rat rod" popularity. As with a lot of other car buffs my age,I can remember buying a really nice driver, what today is considered very collectible, for very little money - (for example), less than the cost of this set of knobs or the price of a "batwing" air cleaner

180 is cheap, it cost me to fill my daily driver 80 dollars, and that lasts me 3 days. the knobs you can keep forever. were not talking 1000's whats 200 not even a good meal at a decent restauraunt. you gotta pay to play. collectible car parts do not come cheap, all knobs are hand polsihed and machined so the fit on the end is great. 180 is a steal considering you cant even buy a lighter knob in the same condition shipped for that.

Actually, the price on those knobs are about right for good reproductions. Back in the mid 90's there was a guy who advertised new reproduction knobs in the POC Bulletin, that lived in Verona, WI. Back then he wanted about $150 per set. So.....with inflation, $229 sounds about right.

That said, I don't agree with the saying "you gotta pay to play". I also would not pay those prices for a few little knobs either. You don't have to play the game the way the seller, or other people want to play the game. You can either bide your time and find a good set at a swap meet cheap like Tim mentioned. Or.........if your car is not original anyway, you can buy a real nice set of new stainless knobs from the street rod catalogs a lot cheaper. And, in my opinion, they will look just as nice. Although not original, they are still period looking.

Dang, Michael, where do you eat at? I can get a hind quarter of corn fed beef for not much more than that. Joel

I agree with you Joel. Michael must not like to eat much if he eats at places that charge that much for a meal. Every time my wife and I have gone out to eat at a restaurant and spent $100 or more for a meal for two, we've come home and had to eat again. All those places serve is atmosphere, not food. You get this big plate with one little spoon full of potato's, about 5 green beans, and about one bite of meat with a little crummy sauce poured all over your plate. Oh, and some stuffy waiter in a tux will normally serve your meal. I'd much rather go to a family type restaurant and spend a quarter of that and come home stuffed. Plus, the waiter or waitress dressed in their everyday clothes are much more friendly. Not only that, but the food taste just as good, if not better. Of course, that could be because we got enough food to taste.;)

I hear you Norm....there are a few high brow places here where different functions such as wedding suppers, ect. are occasionaly held that we have attended, and as far as what and how much they served up I would rather have a double 1/4 pounder and a chocolate shake at Sonic. There are a couple of big Indian casinos here close that have great deals on a dinner out, with 8 or 10 different main meat dishes, a mile of side dish, and salad bars, desserts, ect., and my bride and myself can eat there for around $40.00. I am just not inclined to pay $200.00 for something that I have to give back up in 24 hours.

Michael,

I can't say as I have eaten at a fancy restaurant in NYC. But.........I did eat lunch there once near the Empire State building. Believe me, it didn't cost all that much either. Of course, it was one of those stand up places with no tables.:D Also, that was in 1967.

That said, I'll bet I could find a very good dinner that would only cost around $50 or less for two, even in NYC. If no where else, a good bar usually serves some great meals. When I go out to eat, it's not to look how fancy a place is. I'm going to have a good meal, and that's all that counts. Some of the best food I've had eating out has been at what looks like a hole in the wall outside and inside. But.........they were clean and had great food at reasonable prices.;) Let's face it. Not everyone in NYC has a lot of money. Most are just making it, so there has to be restaurants that serve food at reasonable prices too.

Too much money for 5 knobs. I can wait. Hell for that much money I can make some nice repros on my wood lathe and paint them.

on my Dodge, I got an extra knob for the cowl vent, turned it down to match the shape of the other dash knob..color is the same..this was for an accessory I installed not common to the car from the factory..however it matches very well...if I were going for a points car..the price is really not much out of line given the availability of these and the condition they are in when found...the original material did not hold out near as well as the Dodge plastic..that stuff seems indestructible..

I think it’s way too high as well.

I’ve seen dash knobs on eBay for $25 each. The guys show all the knobs in has auction, and you just buy the ones you need, times the money. So four knobs would be around $100 plus shipping.

The problem is he doesn’t put up auctions all that often. I have him saved as a “favorite seller” and check for auctions from time to time.

So Michael, when I am in NYC next fall and you take me to Peter Lugers, what is it going to cost?:P

lugers for 2 is roughly 350.00, if you get wine maybe 400. i was there with my girlfirend, my friend and his girl. I PAID THE BILL, since my buddy lost his job. Bear in mind that we alll had the filet steak. wine, and some appitizers, and that was 410, with out gratuity. rip off yes, but it was so good. Its funny before a meal i never think about money but after i do.
