Advice on painting "Special Deluxe" Emblem

Recommended Posts

I am just wondering about how much of the "Special Deluxe" emblem should be painted. It is on a D25 and is the same as on a P15. I have attached a picture of one of them before the car went in for a repaint. I am going to repaint the emblem and just wonder if I overdid it last time. Do I paint the top and bottom edges, little parts inside the letters, etc? Does anyone have a picture of an original or know that they redid theirs like original? It is not a question of whether I paint it or not, just how to paint it. I know they were painted originally. I have also redone the lettering in the brake light bezel, the hood ornament, park light bezels, name on the nose of the hood, and will be doing the grille. Any help appreciated and thanks in advance.

Are you taking it off to paint or painting it on the car? What I learned on here is clean it real well from any dirt and grease then put vasoline on the faces of the letters and sides of emblem, being sure that you don't get any on the part that you are painting red. Then, spray paint (not brush) over the emblem a couple coats. Let dry and then simply wipe off the vasoline and you should have a professional-looking painted emblem. It worked for me.

Emblem is off the car and stipped of all paint. Thanks for the advice.

Oh...I forgot....you may want to spray some primer on before you spray the paint. Let us know how they turn out, ey? ;)

I don't know about using vasoline. Seems like that could get a little messy. I think I would simply put car wax on the letters and not wipe it off. Then when the paint has cured, wash the whole emblem. Paint won't stick to the wax/polish since it has silicone in it and would wash and wipe right off. Or, use a candle to rub candle wax on the letters (small birthday candle would work well). Then after the paint has cured it would just peel right off too. Vasoline is greasy.

Is there a color code, or a name for the red? I know that some computer screens can play with the hue. Some I've seen almost look orange. I'm getting ready to do mine and there are some good ideas here. I'm just stuck on the color.

The red I am using is a darker red than the red I used way back when. I just like the darker colour better. I am sure there is a proper colour and it might be worth asking on the POC forum if someone here does not know.

I dont have a color code for the proper color but I do have an NOS set of badges that should give a good idea

Here you go. Be aware there are 3 different styles of these that I've seen so colors and paint schemes may have also varied

Thanks, Ed, I really appreciate that. I will paint them as I did before about 30 years ago which appears how the factory did it. I like the little red touches on these cars. I have done the same with my '53 redoing the red paint where is was when new. Not as much on it with just the name in red on the hood and a few red lines in the grille.

Robert, the easiest way is to strip the old paint off with paint stripper or similar, make sure the badge is nice and clean, then spray the WHOLE badge with a couple of coats of red paint, either enamel or lacquer, let it dry for a few days then dampen a cloth with lacquer thinner and wipe it over the badge lettering, it may take a couple of goes but it will take the paint off the top of the letters only, if you take your time........andyd
