JJs 1948
Does anyone know the method for restoring dash knobs back to the original black with white lettering? I've tried several types of black paint and white for the lettering but everytime I try to wipe extra white paint off the knob face it either smears or doesn't evenly fill the lettering. Sometimes the black paint will come off at the same time. I've also let the black paint (enamel) cure for a week or more before trying to paint the lettering. Any help, please let me know or maybe a source for getting them repainted correctly. Thanks.
MBF
Maybe a sign painter? I cleaned mine up and let the brass centers as they were-nice patina. Mike

Merle Coggins
I used those auto paint scratch touchup deals. I used the brush end to paint the black, then when fully dry I used the ball point end with the white to fill in the letters. They're far from perfect, but good enough at a glance. norrism1
Back in the day, after painting you used a paint stick for the lettering. You rubbed the white stick into the lettering then wiped off the excess and clear coated.

49Bseries
I am also getting ready to repaint and detail the interior knobs. I have been experimenting on a couple of knobs, and while I can get the black paint to look good, I have not yet perfected filling in the letters with white paint. I am thinking of trying a white paint stick. I made this stand out of scrap wood to hold the knobs while I spray them. I finally assembled a complete set. Young Ed
What about spraying the white and then wiping it off the black
Desotodav
Has anybody out there got one of these 'ASH' knobs that they would like to sell? I'm chasing one to compliment the other knobs in my 52 Desoto truck. I have posted in the parts wanted section also. I have a NOS 'ASH' knob with the black paint and white writing fitted to my current ash tray but it is not correct for my truck. You wouldn't happen to have another one RichardB? I was too slow in acting on your last post. Desotodav
ggdad1951
As Davin has shown in his picture, if anyone runs across a ashTRAY like the one in the picture, I'd be interested. No knob needed.

pflaming
gdad: I got that ash tray, thought it was trick. It's not for sale:mad:and looks nice. I changed it a little. I haven't painted it yet, just used electrician tape to see if it would look good and I like it. Todd B
Not original, but this what we did on the current project. I don't have them on yet. I sandblasted the chrome off, spray painted the face, sanded very lightly the face, had the painter tape off face and spray brown paint and then sprayed clear coat over everything. I did find out that all knobs are not brass under the chrome. I had to steel knobs from other trucks because some where a red looking material under the chrome. Todd B
Back in the day I had Miller shorty beer bottle caps on my dash knobs. They will snap right on like they were made for them. Very low budget to make them look good plus you can have some fun drinking the beer first. Todd B

manfromtarsus
What I have done is use a q-tip to carefully cover only the black part with vaseline. Then spray white paint on the entire knob. When it is dry, then wipe the vaseline off the black part and the white paint for the letters remains.
