Speed baby......how fast is the fastest flattie?

I was on the freeway this week end and got her up to about 55. :D

But I know some of the guys have their cars pretty tricked out and probably do better. I had to stop at 60 because the vibration shook the ash tray out.

Well, my truck no longer runs very well and I think that I messed something up pretty good, but I have had it up to 60-65... but now after it warms up I cant seem to go over 30.... Not sure what is wrong!

We have a couple shops here that build "racing engines"......not sure just who uses

them for which type racing. Maybe stock cars, maybe for dragging.....guess I could

ask.

Well, anyway, one day I asked a young man who works for one of those outfits if

they could build a "racing flathead six". He claims they could, but I'm sure there

would be many details to be worked out. Would be interesting to see just what

they could do. And, how much it would cost.

I think my top speed in the quarter mile during the HAMB drags was something

like 57 mph with the convert. I would take off sort of easy so as not to damage

the clutch....

Anybody have any experience with re gearing?? Be nice to get at least 10mph more out of them for highway driving. There used to be a gear set swap available when I restored my Dodge M37 but it was pricey at like $800 just for the gear set.

I swapped out the stock 4.11 gears in my 49 Dodge with 3.54's. Made a big difference in the cruising speed. Found the ring and pinon on eBay.

I also have a complete 3.0 Furd rearend in my 52 Dodge truck. Big difference over the 4.11's.

On the way out to Blythe a couple weeks ago, I managed to get the car up to 85 (this is with the overdrive). When I realized how fast I was going, quickly backed off to 75mph. What I didn't know at the time is that the two front tires were almost out of tread, which I noticed after pulling over to rest. When I saw that, it scared the poop out of me; realizing that the could have had a blow out on the freeway and that would have been the end of that. I had about 21 more miles to Blythe, so I got off on the old highway and cruised in there at 40 mph. I knew I wasn't going to make it to Prescott on those tires, so I got new radials in Blythe, and as I said before...what a difference! I also feel safer driving at higher speeds, now, as well.

My car, fitted with duals, aluminum head, headers and overdrive will cruise all day at 70 and has enough power to accelerate from there, to overtake.

My guess is that it would push 90-100 if I took it all the way.

Future plans include a taller rear end gear.

I'd also like a set of wider rims to fit 6.50x16 tires, instead of the 6.00x16s I'm running at the moment.

For those of you with overdrive transmissions, is it a problem keeping up with freeway traffic? From what I've heard, it's easily done. I seldom go over 70 anyway and that's fine with me.

Not at all. I can run down the highway with everybody else it just takes me a little longer to get to highway speed. I pass some folks while some pass me, but I am definately not a rolling road block.

Good to know. I don't need to get going quickly. I just need to get going eventually. I have a 21-year-old Toyota pickup truck that will go 75 all day long with no trouble. But getting up to speed takes a bit longer than just about any other car on the road. It's OK as long as I get there. I know that people look at it and think, "That's a rolling roadblock." It's rusty and grimy and antiquated-looking. But it goes down the road at a pretty good clip. It'll be a sad day when I have to say goodbye to it.

OK, I went off topic. Sorry.

you want a pocket of fun..drive a Mini Cooper S (original Mini not the BMW Neon powered pacifier)

When I was 16 my dad had a Mini Cooper (not the S). Even the Cooper would blow away most 283's with its mighty 1000cc engine. That thing was an absolute blast to drive. Sliding windows, not roll ups. Four speed and in first and second it would easily outrun most V8's at least up to legal speed in town. Cornered like it was on rails. Tim, you are right, the new ones are nowhere near as much fun. I have a friend with a new one and I am not impressed. Lots of repair issues as well.

The overdrive in my car is what allows it to keep up with freeway traffic. I drove the car for 8 to 10 hours a day cruising at 70-75 without breaking a sweat, all the way from Idaho to Tulsa. My engine is turning 2500 rpms at 70mph, it has a 3.9:1 stock rear end.

My hopped up 230 engine has

in overdrive, and enough acceleration to pass when needed without shifting out of OD.

So, at least 136 mph

I was on the starting line to watch Earl Edgerton's maiden Voyage,

Chris King, mentioned in the article you linked to, is in the black hat and white shirt on the left. A bunch of great guys.

Pretty cool to see Earl's car in action, looking forward to another trip to Speed Week this year.
