Hi Guys,

I noticed this past week while putzin under the hood some wire clips on the center of the underside of the hood. This lead me to believe that possibly the clear plastic hood ornament is supposed to be lighted?? Is this true? I don't have a wire in place, only the clips.

The hood ornament light was an option. If yours did have a light in it you may have the socket in the hood ornament. You would need to pull the hood ornament to see the socket, if it's there. If the socket is there, just solder new wires to it and hook it up to your lights.

The clips you see are actually the retainers for the hood center trip piece. The hood ornement can be lighted and many are but it was not a factory thing. there were contemporary aftermarket kits available, and some have made up their own. I found a flexible plastic GM sidemarker lamp holder that squeezed in and has stayed put for 6 years. I am using the 12V amber bulb which on 6 V just gives a nice glow. It cost me a buck 79 plus the wire. I wired mine to the ign side of the coil so its on with the engine running.

You do need to remove the center trim and the hood ornament assembly to put one in so if you are contemplating doing so, start by putting some penetrating oil on the fasteners for the ornament.

there was some discussion about it being a factory option...nevertheless it is an easy and wonderful addition! i wired mine to the headlights...

right..... absolute cool for 10 bucks and an hour!

I drilled a hole thru the die cast divider at the center of the housing, and epoxied in a high brightness LED, aimed at the plastic insert. Gives a bluish-white glow to the ornament.

Here is a base I have a couple of......came off some other old Plyms

years ago. Pretty simple. Actually, I now have two in there to

spread the light to the front of the ornament. With the brand new

plastic, one light created bright at the rear and not much at the front.

So, had to devise a way to distribute the light.

I have an alligator clip on the connecting wire so I can hook it to either

the parking lights, the hi beam headlights, or the low beam. Usually use

the low beam side.

If you connect it to the low beams, and you have the high on, then no

light. So, it makes a beam indicator as well.

I did the same thing, but put two of them in. Now, I have a very bright beacon leading my way at night...and people notice. ;)

Happy New Year to all of you!! The plastic insert in the hood ornament was NOT

red in the insets from the factory. I agree that it looks nice, but its not what they were new. Ive had several NOS of them ( and still may have one ) and none were painted. I'm familiar with this, having been Tech adviser for the POC since '89. The light-up kit was a add on and so far I haven't found it listed in any of the accessory books I have for P-15s. If it interests anyone--my son has made a few of the light up kits using LEDs which work on either 6 or 12 volt positive ground systems. I think he has three or four left. The price is $45.00 and has all thats needed. A small installation diagram is with it . I can be PM'ed or called at 402

The contemporary aftermarket device sold for the Plymouth was basically a single element medium bayonet socket soldered into a loop in the end of a piece of stiff wire with a loop in the other end for affixing it to the hood ornament hold down stud. That, a bulb and a lenght of wire, and or $1.79 at your local Western Auto store and you are in business.

This is reviving an old post but I have not been in my photobucket account in like forever..here I found a picture of the lamp mount base for the lighted hood ornament...as you can see, it would not be that difficult to make your own..the old style clip in light sockets are still available across the counter in the help isle at most parts stores..
