bobaloo11 Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 I'm planning on starting my "friend" up in a week or so. And was wondering if anyone had some info that can help me in any way. I'm going to do a compression test on it first. Then start it if all is well. The clear bowl etc..that attaches to my fuel pump is missing. (I'm going to use a boat gas can for fuel). Anyone have stuff like that laying around? My oil dipstick is broken, and I could use a OEM air cleaner eventually, anyone? I would like a readable speedo face and gauge cluster faces also. Is there a good place on the WWW for me to find any of this stuff? I don't think the wires for my ignition "on" are good. Is there something I can put a jumpers on under the hood? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 The best place on the WWW to find the parts you need is Ebay (a.k.a. the old Mopar Home Shopping Network). The fuel bowl and filter may be avaliable from Napa or other parts stores. I believe most were AC or Carter brand. I'd try to squirt a little oil into the cylinders before cranking it to help lube the cylinders. It may also help with the compression readings. And you can connect a wire from the starter cable to the ignition coil. Be sure to use an alligator clip so that it can be disconnected quickly if needed to shut 'er down. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 You might as well just get a whole fuel pump. The ethanol in todays gas destroys the old rubber in old fuel pumps. (is the entire country using the 10% ethanol stuff?) Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Whenever I start an engine that has been sitting for a long time I run it on a mixture of gas and 2 cycle oil or Marvel Mystery Oil. The MMO will help loosen stuck rings and valves. Quote

bobaloo11 Posted February 18, 2009 Author Report Posted February 18, 2009 Thanks for all the input.... I like the oil/gas mix idea, makes sense. Before I start a fire, maybe I should ask a dumb question. After years of working on neg. ground vehicles, do I assume that anytime I see a (-) marking on anything, (coil etc.) that would be the "hot" side, right? So running a wire from the starter to coil would be from the main cable on the starter to the - mark on the coil, right? I'm sure gonna see some sparks now and then when working on this! Quote
Dave72dt Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 You might try a tractor repair shop for the glass sediment bowl along with the filter and gasket for it. The - markings would be the hot side of a positive ground system. Quote
greg g Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 right on the electricalpath. The negative side to ignition th epos to points and thereby to ground. If you are goint to jumper it to make the ign hot. You can make up a jumper with a toggle switch, (make sure its taped off well) or do one wilt aligator clips on each end as removing the power to the coil will be the onnly way to shut it down. If you have the manual, do after your compression check, do the procedure for static timing. this procedure brings #1 to TDC compression and allows you to align the distributor to also be lined up to TDC. New plugs properly gaped will go a long way to helping the start procedure. Goos luck. Quote
grey beard Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 AND that new glass filter bowl you are looking for MUST have a gasket that fits air-tight, if you want to pump fuel to the carb. Lotsa' luck:) Quote
bobaloo11 Posted February 19, 2009 Author Report Posted February 19, 2009 I think I'm going to just buy a complete new pump. I can get one thru Autozone for about $50. Anyone had luck with these? Quote
Young Ed Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 What brand/model is that autozone pump? Quote
Zeke1953 Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 I got my fuel pump at Autozone. It has worked fine for the past two years. Zeke Quote
Zeke1953 Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Fuel pump is Autozone part No. 9543; listed for $50.99. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 That comes up as an airtex pump. A few guys have had trouble with them. Norm's coupe found a part # for a carter fuel pump. You might be better off to try and buy that one. Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 19, 2009 Report Posted February 19, 2009 Here's a glass bowl if you want to go that way. Not mine. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260364519261&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1123&viewitem= Or , I have this one I removed a few months ago to installed an elec. pump. It's nearly new and was working fine. $25 Quote
Frank Elder Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 I found a site new to me, http://www.old-n-good.com/parts/fuel-pumps/Dodge_Fuel_Pumps.shtml :D Quote
bobaloo11 Posted February 20, 2009 Author Report Posted February 20, 2009 Reg Evens, I have PM'd you. Bob Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Got it Bob. Need any other parts ? OEM air cleaner maybe ? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 When I rebuilt my engine I got a fuel pump from Andy Burnbaum, and so far it works OK. But I got to wondering about the quality of it, so I got a rebuild kit from Antique Auto Cellar and rebuilt my original one. Now I have a backup. The kit was good quality and the instructions were great. It was quite easy to rebuild. It looks like their web site has changed, and seems to be under construction, but here it is. http://www.maritimedragracing.com/then_and_now_automotive.htm/The_Cellar/cellar.htm Merle Quote
