52B3B108 Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 So, back to the Photobucket discussion and the option to set up a website of your own. Are you still able to store photos on a website that you don't want to share with people? I have a lot of photos I've collected and am afraid one day Photobucket will say, OOPS, they have to go!! Thanks. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 So, back to the Photobucket discussion and the option to set up a website of your own. Are you still able to store photos on a website that you don't want to share with people? I have a lot of photos I've collected and am afraid one day Photobucket will say, OOPS, they have to go!! Thanks. That depends on the type of web site you have and it may cost a little more for that type. You could then set up separate pages. For example one for public viewing and one for private viewing that would require a password to load. The other way is to simply load the pictures onto any type of web site you bought and not give the page a title. By not giving it a title and no keywords the robots would not pick it up in a search someone may run. Anyone wanting to see those pictures would have to know the exact web address to locate the picture. But........someone could accidentally run across the page or picture doing it this way. I have a lot of pictures on my site with no names and/or keywords in the archives. Unless I give you the exact address it's highly unlikely that you'd ever find them surfing the net. You also do not link any pictures to the home page or other public page on your site that you want to remain private. Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 11, 2009 Author Report Posted January 11, 2009 As expected I did not get a reply from Photobucket. They have me by the gonads. I have linked my photos from there all over the internet. If I elect to tell them to buzz off I will lose all the links. So under duress I sent them there dahm fourty bucks. Quote
RobertKB Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Don, I imagine that is their plan. Get people deeply connected and then up the price. Not ethical but is legal. Quote

Young Ed Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 The reason I upgraded to the pay account was I ran out of room. The amount of space has since increased greatly and I wonder now if I let mine convert back how much room I would have. Luckily mine isn't up until June so I have a while to decide. I'm thinking maybe I should setup a site too. I've got my URL name already picked out. Anyone got a good place to learn how to make a site? Quote

I use them for both of my sites, www.50plymouth.com and www.andersonarc.com. E-mail is included in the deal. I originally set up my site using Netscape Composer. Now that Netscape is no longer, I'm not sure what would be the best way to create a site. I'm still using my old copy of Composer to make updates and changes to my Plymouth site. At some point, I will need to find a better way. Pete Quote
Normspeed Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 Today I'm doing some uploading using the free service and it is really behaving badly. I've gone so far as to back out, shut down the PC and start over but I'm getting (only on photobucket) repeated errors telling me IE cannot find the website. If I hit refresh, it finds the website. Also getting very erratic response times for the same repetive tasks. I wonder if they are in some kind of financial/managerial turnover or something? Too bad, it was pretty convenient in the past. Plymouthy Adams Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 Don..I am in agreement...this is one reason I have not hosted photos over there is a long long time..just not user friendly like it once was...I have never been a subscribing member thus I feel I also do not have bitching rights... dezeldoc Posted February 4, 2009 Report Posted February 4, 2009 I have the free account and haen not had any problems(knock on wood) I don't use IE for anything it is junk and to unsecure. firefox or opera work good. Quote
Normspeed Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 I liked Firefox a lot, but when I switched from dialup to Verizon Wireless connection, I was unable to make Firefox hook up. Their help function was pretty non-existent regarding the problem. Quote
greg g Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 Norm, try crazybrowser, its a free download for the basic version. I have been using it for about 5 years at home and about 3 years before that at work. Similar interface as firefox but fewer bells and whisltles. It would well with P bucket, Fokti, and of course ImageShack which I use for posting here and other forums. Quote
dezeldoc Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 First thing with verizon is don't install their software, just let the computer pick up the connection and set it up from there. I made the mistake of instaling it and had to uninsyall it to get thingd working again and it takes up a lot of space. Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 13, 2010 Author Report Posted January 13, 2010 I just once again renewed my bucket. Of interest the one year price was about twenty five bucks this year, and the two year deal (that I did) was thirty nine bucks. Photobucket now has a new feature that I really like. You can view all albums from the link below in my signature line that I just updated. 1 Quote
Young Ed Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Don they must have gotten a lot of complaints. By the time I renewed 6 months after your complaint it was back to 25. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Do you have to have over a certain number of images stored before you have to pay them a fee? I have an album on Photobucket but I've never paid anything for it. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 There is a cap to how much you can store on a free one. Plus no ads on the sides of a pro account. I think since I maxed out my free one they have expanded the amount of space you get. Quote
Job~Rated Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 (edited) I've used a free Photobucket account for many years & had little or no grief. These free accounts have a 500mb storage limit unless you cough up your hard-earned. There is, however, an easier way to get more than enough storage space. E-mail addresses are free to open with many providers, so simply open a second e-mail account - it makes sense to use your existing provider - and use this new e-mail address to open another free account with Photobucket. Don't use this new e-mail address for anything else, that way it doesn't become confusing. The only thing to watch is remembering the new user name & password, but by creating a text document on your desktop with all the relevant info, all you have to do is open this document & copy & paste the details into the relevant boxes on the Photobucket 'Log-In' page. Just remember to only store your original Photobucket link in your 'Favorites' & log out when you wish to use the other one, otherwise it may cause conflicts with your browser & force you to shut down. Voila! 1 gigabyte, instantly. Hope this helps. Edited January 14, 2010 by Job~Rated Quote
garbagestate 44 Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 Somebody is always out there trying to reinvent the wheel. When E bay did it a year or 2 ago I sent them an email stating " Thanks for making Ebay clunky and difficult to use" For what it was worth. Quote
moparjack44 Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 I use the free version, problems with the change, but don't complain since I am paying nothing. Jack Quote
n1gzd_plymouth Posted January 15, 2010 Report Posted January 15, 2010 I decided to create my own web site. I use yahoo small business hosting. $11.95/mo for unlimited disk space. I currently have about 60,000 images there. Yahoo is pretty good. If you call tech support (at least the two times that I did) you immediately get a person who seems to know what they are talking about - and they sound like an American). I have been using it for years, same price, no technical difficulties, I just keep adding more and more pictures. they back up the site, they have some stats that you can look at. I am happy with it. That is my site it by the way (some parts of it are out of date). You can click on the red text to see how I organize my car show pictures): http://www.pangalacticconsortium.com/ Rebecca Quote
