Anyone use a 6V optima battery are they any good ? Are all their 6V batteries that weird shape? I thought I read that there is a cover you can use to make it look normal size is this true?

I have had one about 6 months no complaints seems to hold a charge longer then the wet cell but it does cost a lot more. There is a case that looks like a old battery but I forget who sells it I just use a rubber strap for now until I come up with a better solution

I use one and it starts the car. I think they are all the same shape. I was really put off this summer when the first Mopar enthusiast to open my hood immediately said in a loud voice, "What the hell is that?" Needless to say, I wish he had found something else to focus on. My first really lame defense was that it was really expensive.

I put one in my car about 4 months ago and, aside from the ugly appearance, I really like it.

My car had been hard-starting for a while, so I needed a lot of cranking.

Also, I keep my cars on a battery tender. As soon as I hook it up, the Optima is already blinking green, and solid green within just a few hours.

By contrast, My other six volt car is a regular battery about a year old (cased on the receipt) and is red when I hook it up, blinking green after about 12 hours and solid green after about two days.

Some guys have found issues with these batteries, but mine works great.

I think the company that makes the disguise case is quail.

If anyone wants to give it a try, I've got a 6V Optima that has been sitting in my garage for a couple of years that I used in my 47 until I converted to 12V. I'll give it to someone just for the cost of shipping it.

Marty can I call dibs on that? I'd like to try it out on the spare engine I have sitting in the garage.

I don't use the Optima's, but if I did and someone said something like that to me I'd simply say, "What planet are you from? Looks like a battery to me". Then I would maybe tell him he should read more automotive books and magazines because they've been advertising and selling them for years.

Im glad I didnt because it turned out that he helped me push the car backwards (couldnt get it into reverse or first gear) so I could get home. Mopar guys who are into 49-52 Plymouths and Dodges are few and far between and this guy lives in the same small town as I do. I dont think I thanked him enough for helping me out of a jamb.

My car cranks faster with a 6 volt Optima than it ever did with the best regular battery.

The Optima fits nicely in the stock battery tray, lain down on its side. Terminals facing engine. Provides a better view of that awesome flathead.

The battery kind of disappears this way, since you only see the plain side if you look down low into the fenderwell.

Never thought of that so used to standing up the wet cells. I guess it being a gel cell it would work in any position. I will have to try that with mine.

well...my battery took a dive today...i hadn't started the car in about a week...and it cranked twice and then faded away. Kinda odd...I live in San Diego now...not even under 40 yet in the garage...and that's probably the coldest it gets in there. The battery is only about a year old. I'm thinking of getting an Optima 6 volt instead...there lighter too so i'm sure to pick up some speed..hahaha... The old battery is charging now on the 6volt 6 amp charger...the needle was at 4 and has dropped to below center...did that mean the battery drained from charging? I don't understand that thing... I then tested the cells with that hydrometer (or whatever it's called) and it said it was bad in all the cells. So I tried to start the car....STARTED RIGHT UP! Weird, and now the amp meter seems to not be charging like it used to. It would go all the way to the right when I was at about 2K rpm...now it only moves half way. ANY IDEAS? Sorry for the tangent........

Now on my 3rd year with my Optima. Never failed to start. Hadn't started the P15 in several months and, with below freezing temp (rare here), I cranked it over in just a few tries. Love it! I also purchased one of the dummy cases so mine looks like an original wet cell battery so no funny comments!! lol....TRV24.jpg

David;

Your dummy case is for a 12 volt battery. Do they not make a 6 volt dummy case?
