  1. Here is one currently listed on the HAMB. If I had an extra few bucks and another stall in the garage it would be mine. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=542862&highlight=plymouth

    MPG?

48 Club Coupe, 60 over 218, Offy intake, dual Carter Webbers, cast iron headers, 3.90 gear, R10 OD. From Plano, TX to Joplin, MO for HAMB drags 2 years in a row. Roughly 870 miles round trip with probably around 100 miles in town driving around Joplin area. First year 19.9 mpg for the round trip and last year 19.5 mpg. Running 60-65 on the Highway - Interstate. Last year had a front wheel bearing go out on me about 1/2 way home so that may have contributed some to the drop in mpg.
  3. I used a Best Gasket Graphtite rope rear main seal about 18 months ago and have had no leaks from the area since.
  4. Not a guru by any stretch, but I have had a couple of pretty healthy engines including a low 12 second on street tires big block Cuda, but you are correct I could have had a V8 for what I have spent on my flathead. The thing is I didn't want a V8, didn't want to get lost in the sea of V8's. My flathead gets much more attention than another V8 at a show.
  5. Fred, I was at a hockey game tonight myself. Hockey is actually fairly popular in Texas believe it or not. I was at a Jr A game between my hometown Texas Tornado (4 time National Champs) and the Amarillo Bulls. They play in a 26 team league with 4 teams in Texas. Tornado (Frisco), Bulls (Amarillo), Wildcats (Wichita Falls) and Ice Rays (Corpus Christi). Of course not the same level as your Major Juniors but pretty good hockey none the less. Send quote a few kids on to NCAA D1 programs as well as Minor Pro and a few to the NHL. Maybe if I am lucky I will see your kids on the ice in Texas one of these days. Already told my daughters that if and when they have grandsons for me they will have skates as soon as they can walk.

  7. I guess it depends on what you call a lot of money. Personally I do not consider the headers all that expensive at $275 and I had to get an exhaust system installed anyway. A dual exhaust is not 2X the cost of a single more like 50% or 60% more. Not at all. If you run some decent turbo style mufflers not all that loud. Do trips of over 850 miles and 450 miles each summer and have never found it annoying. During the exhaust stroke, an engine to loses power through back pressure. The exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust stroke, and then the piston pushes the exhaust gases out of the cylinder. If there is any amount of resistance that the piston has to push against to force the exhaust gases out, power is wasted. Once the exhaust gases exit the cylinder they end up in the exhaust manifold. With a straight 6-cylinder engine, there are 6 cylinders using the same manifold. From the manifold, the exhaust gases flow into one pipe toward the *muffler. The manifold can be an important source of back pressure because exhaust gases from one cylinder build up pressure in the manifold that affects the next cylinder that uses the manifold. Header eliminate much of the manifold's back pressure. Instead of a common manifold that all of the cylinders share, each cylinder gets its own exhaust pipe. These pipes come together in a larger pipe called the collector. The individual pipes are designed so that each one is the same length as the others. By making them the same length, it guarantees that each cylinder's exhaust gases arrive in the collector spaced out equally so there is no back pressure generated by the cylinders sharing the collector. I guess in theory by reducing the back pressure in the exhaust it could lead to a rich condition which is pretty easy to adjust. My intake is plumbed for hot water heat, they can also be fairly easily plumbed for exhaust heat Yes, and if you add headers or split manifold to the larger head/tail pipe and low restriction muffler it will perform even better, to a point. You can actually have too free flowing an exhaust. I guess that would be the case if the car came with factory headers and low restriction dual exhaust. Or you are going for a concourse / points judged restoration. If on the other hand you are looking for improved performance and you have a factory 6 into 1 exhaust manifold not the case at all. And why doesn't everything you said concerning the 6 cylinder exhaust apply to your V8, when in fact your V8 has two 4 into 1 exhaust manifolds rather than a single 6 into 1. Your statements should be even more applicable to a V8. All that said, I will agree that adding only dual exhaust and not making any other changes to the engine is not going to do much in the way of increased performance. You also have to be willing to make some changes on the intake side of things to open up the breating further and ideally go to a more suitable cam grind as well, but all in all a reduction in exhaust restriction will lead to a better performing engine.
  8. I think it is worth it if for no other reason than the way it sounds. Here is a link to a youtube of mine when first installed. I do also have the Stovebolts cast iron headers.
  9. Merle, You might send him here to poke around. They have quite an extensive links page. http://www.moparts.com/ Also if he is looking for interior stuff he might want to check out Year One http://www.yearone.com/
  10. Yeah that pulley and compressor are HEAVVVVVVY, 42.8 pounds. Will have to do some rework on the bracket as it bolts to the top of the head like yours does and I will be installing a new finned head at the same time. May have to come up with something totally different and just sell the bracket/compressor and "saw blade" to someone over on the forward look site.
  11. Oh, I'm not using the 57 compressor I already have a Southern Air system ready just through I would use the pulleys, idler and maybe the bracket once I modify it.
  12. JIPJOBXX Amen, thank you for sharing.
  13. I have a stock Mopar double crank pully on a 57 model 230 with A/C that will be going into my 48 Coupe. Problem is that with the factory A/C there is an offset water pump that drops the pulley on the pump down to where the top of the 48 motor mount bolts to the engine. So, I will either have to make some major mods to the stock 48 motor mount or make some new frame mounts to use the 57 side mounts. Not sure what I am going to do yet.
  14. Straight from the horses mouth er uh keyboard back at the end of September.
  15. I am running his distributor and round coil. No ballast. Just wired it per the directions but it was a couple years ago that I installed it so don't remember how it was wired off the top of my head.
  16. AAJetz Where are you located in the Metroplex? I am in far north Plano near Custer and 121. Maybe if you need some help I could offer a hand sometime.
  17. I'd sell the ferd and buy a real V8 like a 360 or 340. In fact I would go with a Poly. It would definately be more expensive but the cool factor would be 3X the ferd.
  18. I loved the gold PU and the Anglia. The PU would look even better with a Poly or early HEMI.
  19. Was at the Roundup in Austin this summer when I heard a guy walking by the car below telling his wife/girlfriend "that is a nice Corvair"
  20. Off topic but there are several auto related segments.
  21. My family spent 10 days in Killarney a few years ago and must say that it was the best vacation we have ever had. Made it to Kilkenny, Waterford, Bunratty, Cahir, Cashel, Blarney, Ring of Kerry. The country side was beautiful, the castles/history were amazing, the people were friendly/helpful, and the Baileys/Guinness was smoother. I would highly recommend Ireland to anyone looking for an international vacation.
  22. The Coolest System would be to replace the 350 with a real engine like a 340 or 360. Other than that, I would remove the radiator cap and measure the temp of the coolant in the radiator tank. That should give you a good indication of the accuracy of the gauge. The temp of the coolant in the head would be a little higher just due to the fact that it is nearest the heat source, but there should not be a significant difference.
  23. Muffler Man (or Muffler Men) is a term used to describe large molded fiberglass sculptures that are placed as advertising icons, roadside attractions or for decorative purposes, predominantly in the United States. Standing approximately 20 feet tall, the first figure was a Paul Bunyan character designed to hold his axe.[1] Derivatives of that figure were widely used to hold full-sized car mufflers, tires, or other items promoting various roadside businesses. International Fiberglass of Venice, California constructed most Muffler Men.
  24. Just picked up a 57 Belair that was originally a fuelie car, but now it has no running gear. Have a pretty fresh slant 6 in the corner of the garage so it is going between the fenders.
  25. Then there is this one.
