  1. I numbered as sets F1L, F2R, to be certain each remained as or and position on the truck. The teflon was because I had some. Oh I also cleaned them with a rust inhibitor before reassembling. I would be cautious about removing too many leafs. After all they are the foundation for driving stability.
  2. I cut off all of mine. Once apart, I numbered them to keep them to together. Your springs show much more rust than mine did. Sure brings back memories. The teflon strips are only on the end of the leafs, if I remember right. A huge task. My best to you.
  3. The metal strips are shevol strips. The strips' ridge should be above the surface of the wood so that when shevoling grain or sand or . . . the shevol will no dig into the wood. Times and needs have changed so now the strips are largely decorative.
  4. I removed the 2nd from the bottom. Silicone for leaf movement. In my opinion, a stiff high rear would not ride very good and might be very hard on your back. Remember this is a truck and that bed does not weigh very much. If I were going for a rake, I think I would consider smaller rims and tires up front. This pic has smaller front tires.
  5. I removed one leaf on each rack. I DA sanded each remaining the coated them with silicone before reassembling. It lowered the truck 2" front and rear. The center of gravity changed so it does not drive top heavy. With radial, 15" rims, i think it looks much better. Nothing was impacted. I have smaller tires up front for a nearly unperceptable rake. Be be prepared for a lot of work.
  6. Three years ago we spent some time at the International Peace Garden on the border between USA and Canada. The beams were from the tower ruins and the area was a memorial to 911. Beams that large came down into two piles. It staggers my mind to envision how high those piles were. They had to be torched into manageable lengths to be removed. President TRUMP said the debrie on Wall Street, seven blocks away was steel, concrete, and trash ash was two(2) feet deep.
  7. Check the two mount screws on the top Of the tube that hold the top of the shifter rod. If they are loose or pulled out, the shifter won't work!

  12. My truck engine has the crank nut. Will order a crank. Be fun to walk up to it, on the street downtown, and crank start it!
  13. Paris, Maine to Peking (Delight), San Francisco, CA is 3,234 miles! Google Map! Two mountain ranges, one long arid, salty highland, miles of rolling grassland, and dense woods on the drive. A flat head should handle that! LOL
  14. Place it on an old tire. That cushions the ride and it won't slide around. I stil tie an engine four ways. Should you have an accident, you don't want that coming at you at 60 mph! JMHO
  15. Why keep the fluid drive? Engines and three speed transmissions are always available and inexpensive. I would much prefer a three speed and overdrive to the fluid drive.
  16. The overdrive offers some very nice options, third and over on the highway the most obvious. In my experiences, I grew up with overdrives, second and over is nearly as nice especially in mountainous driving or mid range traffic speed. Good choice and best to you?
  17. I envy your cross country vacation and the pictures. You will hear the hum of that flathead for some time. Well done!
  18. Chanced on to a "restore car" show. They were unloading a box of new parts. Must be fun to dismantle a car then reassemble it with all new parts! Like car magazines, all these shows are all about selling new parts. Not much reality there.
  19. Replacing the timing chain is no mean task. I'm going to defer that so I can concentrate on the Suburban even if I have to park the truck. So here is the ticker: what are the chances the chain will fail and what happens if it does? An inquiring mind needs to know. Temps in the 90's for a few days then into the high 80's. It's time!
  20. I'm working on the timing chain. When I started attaching this "magic degree marker" I recalled that my pulley has TDC and degrees stamped into it. I am using the paper tape because it is easier to read. I taped it to match TDC on the pulley. This is NOT good for my arthritis! But the play must go on!!! So slack to contact = 15 + degrees,, new timing chain.

  22. I'm getting increasingly anxious to drive this car. I'm thinking it will be a better vehicle than the truck, so I may try and get my daugher to take this instead. Then detail the truck and sell it. I think the truck will sell quicker than the Suburban and for more money. Your opinions on this are welcomed.
  23. Where does this go? Rear engine mount? It's different than the new ones. Maybe years of compression changed its form. Question 2 : what level hardness bolt should be used?
  24. I love that idea, will have to find a couple old tractor seats and bolt them on my tail gate!
  25. I had some business with a "We buy Cars" company today. When the owner heard I have a couple '50s cars, he said that last Friday he sold a 51 Dodge Coronet Two do to be crushed. Solid car but no engine. Sad. I think that's a popular car, or am I wrong.
