  1. When I was a lad, the neighbor boys had a hound dog truck. They had a cage behind the cab which held two hungry greyhound dogs. They would drive through the countryside and when they spotted a coyote they would release the dogs. Lots of coyotes in the late 40's in western Nebraska. Some hunted coyotes flying pipercub airplanes. I think those little planes were covered with fabric.
  2. When a friend and I tried to bleed the lines, I did not make sound flares, so rather than redo flares today I bought the copper/aluminum easy form tubing, which come preflared and with fittings, . I did one, they are so easy to form and mold to the frame. I will never flare a tube again and I will replace all steel lines. With these tubes it will not be a difficult task.
  3. Because I had three of them. I erroneously thought the 53/54 Suburban parts would sell because of scarcity. The catch is that not many car buffs are working Suburbans and not many were made to begin with. So. . . . I cut one up, sorry.
  4. Knuckleharley. This is the current status of the floor. I may change some of the metal pieces when I weld it, fewer pieces, fewer welds. In some ways it's not too pretty, but in the end it gets covered.
  5. The simple fact that the original MC is also the mount for the clutch and brake pedals is what sold me. Now the reservoir, while above the floor line, IS behind the gas pedal and nearly under the seat so it is never an obstruction. If I had kept the original seats I could have moved the Cherokee MC further back but my bucket seats did not allow that. There is another Jeep MC that has a lower reservoir annd I could switch, but I won't. Once all is assembled and a nice carpet is in it will hardly be noticeable. I have fabricated a box cover for it as well. I'm a strong believer in keeping things simple.
  6. Now here is a family man who has his priorities correct. Buy an inexpensive Edsel station wagon, fix it mechanically, shine the original paint as best he could, buy a number of old bicycles and take the family camping! Cool
  7. I used a 97 Jeep Cherokee MC. I gutted the original and extended the push rod. Did the same thing on my truck five years ago, works great.
  8. 1938 was a very GOOD year! . LOL
  9. True, we have become accustomed to quiet cabins, the reality of driving and shifting per the sound of the engine is a lost reality.
  10. Torque! Vehicles had to climb hills which were knee deep in snow or ankle deep in mud. Very little of rural America had graveled roads let alone paved ones. It all boiled down to power at slow speeds. Few drove more than 40 miles in one direction. Because steam engines required water and coal every six or eight miles, few lived more than 15 miles from the grocery store, gas station or Doctor. I grew up on the edge of the great sand hills of Nebraska. We were at the end of the road. East and south of us were thousands of acres of grass land. I never knew a neighbor to the east or south. So the answer is torque!
  11. Free auto parts? Now here is a new way to fix a rusted out floor. Priceless!
  12. ". . . have the large and heavy air cleaner to quiet the carb intake noise...does a good job too." so the carb is a source of noise, and a tall air cleaner is in effect a muffler? Interesting.
  13. Possibly can't write cursive either and the new math may not go to 80! LOL
  14. With that radio you can listen to three kinds of music, '50's favorites, country, and western! WOW.
  15. Wow! A Dodge and a COUPE also. Now that you have a four door, a convertible, and a coupe, now you need a Suburban!!!!
  16. At $90 a set of 10, why waste your time making something untested. These connect the body to the frame, they keep it stable through curves and swerves and balanced in a HARD stop. It's not a good place to skimp in my opinion. JMHO
  17. I am aware that this question may be naive, but will ask anyway. What does the extra spring accomplish?
  18. This is what I needed for my Suburban. You will possibly need fewer. Purchased from Andy Bernbaum. I believe they were 9.00 a pair, no hardware. 9 X 10 = $90.00, I thought that was reasonable because there are 20 pieces.
  19. "Keep the faith brother. I've had nagging knee issues for a year now, an MRI later says torn meniscus, worn cartilage and (to me) the kicker: arthritis. Looks like some time dealing with the pain before the inevitible replacement. I look to you for inspiration to just keep moving along." i went knee surgery about a year ago. I have a new, pain free knee, but the healing time was not fun. Have a long, detailed talk about Ned's before you leave the hospital. AND HAVE YOUR WIFE THERE! While the knee is fine, the legs are not. I'm walking every morning and at times can tell some things are changing.
  20. We are coming down. When my son comes home tonight I'll have him watch what is happening when I bring the front down I've just been inching down. It took me a while to fine a way to lift the back. This worked great. The 2X6 took the pressure and all is well. After dinner we lowered it ON THE FRAME!!! What a relief.
  21. "Purple acid"? Is that the same as prune juice?
  22. Greg, would that body fit on a VW pan? That would be sweet!
  23. Today I just completed 80 years of life. I grew up without electricity, telephone, and TV, seen a world war, a president assasinated, a terrorist strike on New York/ USA, a USA Olympic soccer team beat a Russian team, men on the moon and back, and a non politician become President of the USA. Anyone else my age?
  24. Today I rolled the chassis back under the body. The pace may pick up now. Next to lower it onto the chassis, then start connecting things together.
  25. Thank you. I've never been in that type of wilderness.
