oldmopar Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 For the carpet you may want to check JCW about 2 or maybe it was 3 years ago I sold a 49 Dodge to a friend at work and he purchased and installed the carpet from them and had no complaints it was a 4 door. There seems to be plenty of sellers of the carpet but not too many of the rubber. I have a universal rubber floor mat (cut to fit) in my Willys wagon it looks and fits ok not perfect. It is Not from Roberts but either one of the willys suppliers or maybe JCW. My personal choice would be to install carpet in a car unless you are going for a period correct car it looks good helps muffle sound and available in choice of colors. Ed Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 When I first got my car (47 Plym) , I purchased a NOS rubber mat for the front. Of course, the problem was that it was old and therefore a bit brittle. It began to split in certain places after a while. So a year or two ago I had a local upholstry guy make carpets from the roll of carpet I had purchased at a wholesale place in K C., MO. Also had a roll of padding to go under it. Not correct, but I like it. Quote
Normspeed Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 I've got an aftermarket rubber mat in the 53, it came with the car when I bought it. It doesn't fit all that well but bettern nothing. When the budget permits, I'll go with carpet. Less chance of trapped moisture I think. I already cut my own carpet for the rear floor and the cargo area. Edit: I'll likely go with JC Whitney as opposed to Roberts, more likely to get the order filled correctly first time. Just an opinion based on experience. Quote
Johnny S Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 Joe, here are some photos of the only NOS type replacement floor covering that I've located so far for the P17 and P18's. And, as the note impressed into the mat says .... "49-52 Plymouth"....so it must work on other models as well. Also, did you get those Kitchener Green 1949 Plymouth photos? John Quote
Johnny S Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 Joe, the brand-name on this floor mat is "Contour" .... its a vintage mat and is getting somewhat hardened and starting to tear at places that have formed "seams" over the years. I think I will still use it but it would be great to have a similar "new" version for sure. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 28, 2008 Author Report Posted February 28, 2008 Johnny, Thanks a lot for posting those. I mentioned in an earlier post that Roberts sells a reproduction but I haven't seen a picture. It would be nice to find a good quality reproduction if such a thing exists. I got the pictures. Thanks very much. The colors are great. Mine, as you've probably seen, is a very light green. I don't know if that's from weathering or what. But I would go with pretty much any of the colors in the pictures you sent. Thanks again. Quote
T.Tom Meshingear Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 In my 1949 the original decrepit mats were still in place. The front were ribbed with the same unusual pattern as shown in the owner's manual. The ribbing went front to back at the front of the mat and side to side on the part under your feet. The rears were rubber but had a loop pile carpet pattern molded on the surface to make them look like carpet. That may be why some people think that the raer was carpeted. Look at Johnny's first photo at the heel pad area and you can see the carpet shaped surface treatment. Reproduction mats in the correct pattern would be a dream come true. Tom Quote
blueskies Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 ... The rears were rubber but had a loop pile carpet pattern molded on the surface to make them look like carpet. ... Found this pic of my rear mat, before I removed it. You can see the molded pattern and the color of the rear mat. It was a sort of beige. There was a seperate piece that was wrapped onto the footrest under the front seat. Pete Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 An idea might be: because the rear mat is pretty flat without many curves.... you might look for matting sold by the foot at a janitorial supply house, or similar place. Would not be the same pattern, but could be better than nothing. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 You may want to check local van converters to see what's available. I got the floor mat that was removed from a new Ford Econoline van. Not original pattern, but big enough to cut down. Harold Quote
greg g Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 Pete, hve you changed you picture host?? All I have been getting on your posts for about the last three weeks is x's. Quote
blueskies Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 Pete, hve you changed you picture host?? All I have been getting on your posts for about the last three weeks is x's. Dammit... I don't know why this keeps happening. I just got a response from Network Solutions, my host, and they asked me to save a screen shot of the red X's, and send it to them with my IP address. Problem is, it rarely happens to me, because all of the images are already in my cache. Do you think you could e-mail me a screen shot, along with your IP? Maybe they can get it figgered out... Mean time, if you hit reload on your browser, the images should come up. Thanks, Pete Quote
greg g Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 Well before I opened you reply I did a refresh and the ic is there now. So next time I will try to supply the info you asked for. I don;t know how to get a screenshot from my old computer. So if you can send along the process, I give it a try next time you have a pic that doesn;t show up. Quote

Young Ed Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 I do this at work all the time. Pete I can send you a screen shot from there. If you press print screen on your keyboard you can then paste into a word document and email. Quote
greg g Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 I believe there is a guy who pedals some stuff as trunk floor matting. It has a ribbed surface but the ribbing is different form the MOPAR pattern. My 46 has the same type rubber matting as shown in the manual picture. I believe the trunk matting comes in a piece large enough to cover the front floor and back under the seats. Quote
plymouthdoctor Posted March 1, 2008 Report Posted March 1, 2008 Joe, I have been working with a local producer to create replacement floor mats for 1935 - 1941 Chrysler products and have been pleased with the results. As it happens, I have an exceptionally good mat in my 1950 that could be used for a pattern in making the die to be used in the production process. If there are 20 restorers out there that would commit to buying them, I would initiate the process and bring them to market. This part would include the part number and be made in black urethane at the same mill thickness as the original. (I do not like "fitz-all" reproduction items so will assure that this mat passes the "authenticity" test) Generic mats can be purchased for around $100 or you can sometimes catch a NOS mat on e-bay at prices that are all over the place. The retail price for this mat would be $249 plus shipping. Let me know if you are interested and let's see what kind of enthusiasm there is for the idea. Johnny S Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 Wayne, I would be interested in 1 for my '49 P18 for sure. I will commit to one at the $249 plus shipping price quoted but will eventually need a second one as well. John Smeltzer Colorado Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 (edited) Joe..while I have no desire to install a rubber mat back in mine, I did however toss about and experiment with a product to simulate the coating/insulation on the floor, it has stranded fibers..I did the three foot wells.. I have almost 1 gallon of this stuff spread on the floor in the three places. My test section I did last week convinced me this should be just the ticket. Dries very well..stayed pliable, no odor..Further, I plan to coat this yet again with another product that will leave a good looking painted topcoat... Edited May 20, 2017 by Plymouthy Adams Quote
John Mulders Posted May 3, 2008 Report Posted May 3, 2008 I thought the mats were of a sort of fabric, the sils would be rubber. What would be used on the floor of the Plymouth 1948 Special the Luxe Coupe? John Quote
