I'll be replacing my muffler system on 47 Plymouth in the near future. I'd like to get a nice soft purring sound coming out the back, not loud like the stratight thru mufflers. Are there any out there? Ed P.

I am running a Dynamax turbo flow on my custom bent set up.Fairly loud growl under acceleration, nice sound at the 45 to 55 area. But no rumble no roar. Should be available at most parts places. I agot mine from the same muffler shop that did the bending. I think it was in the 30 dollar area.

I put a Dynamax turbo on my Cherokee(inline six) a few years ago....I didn't like it. It was too loud and raspy for my taste. No offense Greg. I would go to a shop and ask for a quiet one...I think it's easier to get a nice quiet muffler than a "performance " sounding one just because everyone does have different tastes in what sounds good....as opposed to quiet is quiet to basically everyone.

Yep loud is in the year of the beholder. I had the turbo max on my Jeep also, I guess that is why I chose it for my P15. I didn't want the volumn of a cherry bomb or smittys. I thought the jeep was OK. Not the vacuum cleaner whoosh of OEM types and not the raspy volumn of the glasspacks either. I gess there are different styles of Dynomax also, maybe they have changed them over the years.

Guess you could always ask the techs at the muffler shop for some recommendations also. Also depends on whether you are going duals or staying single.

I've heard a couple P15s with Smittys and to me they are not loud or harsh, especially in comparison to the single Flowmaster setup I have. One is on Darin's single exhaust, stock 230 and the other on Mikemaker's, a dual exhaust. Not sure of the length of them.

I have a Smitty on my coupe. Its not that loud but is louder than when first installed in the late 90's. When it goes out, I'm going to a nice quiet stock type muffler though. Guess I'm just getting too old for loud pipes.

Forgot the type mufflers my son has on his 80 Firebird, but.............I can hear him coming from about 3 or 4 blocks away when outside during the summer, and he's only going the speed limit of about 25 MPH in the neighborhood. If he's in the driveway and hits the gas hard, the dishes rattle in the cabinets. That's way too loud for me.

I've been looking at the Hushpower II mufflers, which is a smaller muffler made by Flowmaster, but all of the installations I've found have been on V-8-powered cars. I'd be interested to find out if they would work for our 6's.

Greg..I have not started my car yet...I know that would drive some people up the wall..however..am not sure what to expect with my dual 2 1/4 Dynamax mufflers with H-pipe on the 383 big block..think it would rumble? Dang sure be pissed if it is brappy...

I like the Smitty I have . It let's out a nice, deep, "throaty" sound that doesn't blow out the neighborhood when you go down the street. Personally, I'm opposed to mufflers that make a loud rapping sound when you let off the gas...at least on my car. I never really liked the sound. Out here in Californnia, rapping mufflers are more common with the lowrider culture and some lead sleds, from what I can see.

The Smitty comes in three lengths

22" good growl and bit of a rap.

26" smooth burble ( I have one of these) will never get annoying

30" forget it.... these are for granny.

I guess I would have the 26" because I'm sure my car doesn't sound like something for granny...lol

I've got hushpowers on my Chevy truck with a 283 in it. I love the sound. Is pretty quiet until you get up the rpms. Real nice mellow 50's tone.

I would think they would sound good with the 6's as well.

Thanks, guys, for all that info. Too bad there isn't a site where you can actually hear the different sounds of various mufflers. Sort of like a test ride. Ed P.

whatever...if you ahve a split manifold you might get a 'rap' with any glaspak...with a single or crossover set-up and any glaspak you will get only a rumble.

my 41 with dual cherry bombs at top rpm scares the hell out of cars i pass.

gotta change them next month for 26" smittys.or local glaspaks.

look inside the muffler at the preforations...if smooth like a screen..rap!

if rough like a wood rasp 'rumble'.

exhaust gases go straight thru...sound waves go up and down..therefore bigger holes, and longer mufflers calm it down.

just do it!

I have the 22 inch, not crazy about this one, should have got the 26 or 30 inch Smithy.

The 22 inch is fairly loud at 45 to 60 mph, will get a quieter muffler next time, may get rid of this one, it has aonly a few hundred miles on it...............Fred

Claybill, are you saying I can eliminate the annoying brapping sound my 230 suddenly brakes into at around 1500 rpm's and beyond by installing a crossover? Right now J Lo sounds real nice with a deep rumble until I hit that rpm and then suddenly the sound raises and octive and doubles in volume and all hell breaks loose. Sounds like two hyper trombonists playing Flight of The Bumble Bee. I have Langdon headers and 2" pipe all the way back with 16" MAGNAFLOWS just before the rear end. $400 later and I'm embarrassed by the sound.:o:mad:

....by installing a crossover?...

Reg-

Here's a pic of my crossover-

exhaust4.JPG

It's placed just behind the transmission crossmember, and just before the mufflers (smithy's).

My car has a nice even tone, no rapping or snapping or rack-ack-ack sounds at all. It does get a bit louder at one rpm range, but it's hardly noticable. More of a change in the tone.

The placement of your mufflers may have something to do with the sound your getting too. I would think that having the mufflers near the rear of the car would make them louder, as there is less pipe to quiet the noise after the muffler.

I think you're on to something there Pete. Thanks. I'm going to have him move the mufflers closer to the front and install a crossover.

If that doesn't fix it I guess I'll just have to kill him.

I'm getting rid of my smithy's also. Much too loud for a cruiser IMO.

What did you finally come up with Reg?

I've ran cross overs off an on over the years on several supposedly HP engines. Unless your talking 400 hp and up your not going to notice much, if anything. I also like the idea of locating misfire, etc with no cross over.

I believe the rapping and such is based on timing.

I'm thinking a toned down glass pack if there is such a beast.

I haven't been able to do anything about the exhaust system yet. It snowed here for a couple of days,my muffler man went on vacation and then my back took a vacation too for a couple of weeks. I'm finally able to move around again so maybe I can get something done with it this coming week.
