John Mulders Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 I believe Europe is serious at the environment issue. Netherlands are planning to ban the old fashioned bulb in 2009. By then you would have to have the energy saving ones. Here in Curacao we have loads of fluorescents, a lot is kept on during the night. I have a number of automatic lights. Changing to the energy saving ones has a issue here. In the Netherlands the voltage is 230V / 50 HZ, here we have 130 V / 50 HZ (don't ask me why, this is also the case in Jamaica). As we import a lot of electronic goods from the US and these are 110/60 we have more electronics with a short life span. Adapter for cheaper equipment will burn through in matter of days. We use stepdown transformers but that is costly aswell. Sometimes you run into good quality items (the 110/230 Volts and 50/60 Hz equipment). These can handle things better, unless we get a nice spike from the electric company Oh, and we also have a lot of 230V/50Hz outlets aswell (so I have two types of outlets). Very handy as a lot of my tools are from the Netherlands. Also airco's run here on 230V as this is more efficient (saving a bit) than the 110 V units. We don't discuss the weather here, always around 87-89 Fahrenheit. Mostly sunny and some periods with rain. John Quote
greg g Posted March 11, 2007 Report Posted March 11, 2007 Energy saving compact flouresent replacement bulbs have a problem. They, if you read the fine print, pose a mercury and lead hazard and are to be disposed of in a specific manner. Throwing them in the trash when they burn out put this dangerous heavy metal back into the environment when they borken, crushed or compacted. Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 12, 2007 Author Report Posted March 12, 2007 Today at my place it was about 43 degrees and it was spittin a little rain. I went to my in-laws farm, early this morning, it's about 70 mile north of here , where the terrain gets a lot more rugged lot's of pine trees, birch and wild animals. From the inlaws we went another 30 minutes north to another cattle farm and butchered a nice prime steer, it was a lot colder at this place than where I live, the steer dressed out at 600 lbs, I split the animal in 2 then split here into quarters and put here in the truck. We then took them to the in-laws farm, I then had the pleasure of carrying these quarters to the cooler house and hanging them on the hook, well the ground was slippery, there is a step into the cooler house, and the fronts weighed about 180 lbs a piece. This in itself is not bad, but fresh killed beef is sloppier than a pig in $hit, well I got the beef hung up, but man I can feel it tonight. I use to carry these carcasses onto train cars and trucks when I first got out of high school, but that was 25 years ago. My ride home was a real fun, as it was raining and it was cold enough to freeze to the highway. Quote
knighthawk Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 I think there's a lot of things that were easier 25 - 30 years ago ! You should have seen me last summer fixing and replacing the barn roof.! Had to buy a 20' extension ladder to get up there, almost 40' !!! The scariest part was when I had to get out on the peak ............upper 60's here for a few days Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 12, 2007 Author Report Posted March 12, 2007 Larry, you are a braver man then me, don't like high peaks. I have friends to do this, and I stay on the ground and supervise. I am good to about 20 ft, say on my house roof, the house is a Bi-level,with a 4/12 pitch not too bad to work on, my brother used to clean windows on a swing stage in Downtown Winnipeg buildings, going up 25 to 40 stories, but that was in his youth also.......Fred Quote
knighthawk Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 if i did this right, there should be couple barn pictures,...........................well I don't know where they went, but I did try ! Quote
DutchEdwin Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 For DST in Europe, we go over at 25 March. Soon enough. I'm not ready to skipp that 1 hour of sleep yet . That will bring us 1 hour closer to each other for a few day's. Last few day's we've had 66F over here. So, YESSSSS I finaly got to paint my engine parts. Hope it will stay like this for a few day's so I can finish painting. I must say, the POR15 manual is right.......it will NOT get off. So I'm typing this mail with silver grey fingers. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted March 12, 2007 Report Posted March 12, 2007 Dutch, go to your local pharmacy, or what wver you have there that would have medical/first aid supplies, and get some latex gloves. They'll keep that paint off of your fingers. It'll take a couple of days to wear it all off. Until then you'll have silver fingers. Latex gloves, or look like the Tin Man, Your call. Merle Quote

DutchEdwin Posted March 16, 2007 Report Posted March 16, 2007 The paint looks good on my hands. I just hate those gloves. No good cleaning device as your own fingers. Next paint job tomorrow. The paint from the last job is almost gone.... from the fingers. The parts ready look greatttttt. Quote

55 Fargo Posted March 23, 2007 Author Report Posted March 23, 2007 It's warmer, but as you remember living in Minnesota, spring and warm weather don't hit until April and beyond. The geese and crows are back, so are the hawks. I saw a bald headed eagle at the end of my driveway yesterday. The deer are out in the fields in huge bunches. The temp is supposed to be 50s and high of 63 on Monday.........................YEEEEEHAAAAA Spring is here in Manitoba Quote
Young Ed Posted March 23, 2007 Report Posted March 23, 2007 I would just like to say I live in MN and went for a ride in a convertible with the top down! Dad got a new toy and we had to try it out. 75 olds delta 88 royale convert with a 3504bbl. Quote

55 Fargo Posted March 23, 2007 Author Report Posted March 23, 2007 Ed, I know the twin cities is not like Warroad or Int Falls, weather wise, but you are probably one of the coldest big cities in the continental USA. But I do remember going to the Twin Cities years ago in November, and it was 50, while in Winnipeg it was 10 f. Winnipeg is one of the coldest cities in the world next to maybe Moscow Russia. And I would have taken a ride with the top down, great for you guys, enjoy the spring weather...........Frosty PS IT'S ABOUT 45 RIGHT NOW AT MY PLACE Quote

RobertKB Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Snow on the ground here and just above freezing. Fortunately the roads are warm enough that the snow melted upon contact but snow stayed elsewhere like the grass, trees, and roofs. Quote
knighthawk Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 this morning it was like 75 degrees , the about 11:00 the black clouds rolled from the North , wind came up , temp dropped 10- 15 degrees, going down to 39 tonite ! I guess the "Norther " out blew the "Texas draw" !! Quote
Brad Lustig Posted April 3, 2007 Report Posted April 3, 2007 I couldn't find the actual product that I was looking for, but there is a lotion that protects your hands against superglue. Should work for POR-15, too since it's basically just colored superglue. I remember watching the demonstration of the stuff. The guy rubbed the stuff on his hands (something like Liquid Gloves), then took an entire bottle of superglue and spread it on one hand, put the other on top. You could hear it crackling as it setup. Then he just peeled his hands apart and the superglue just flaked off. This product claims to protect against superglue, but it's not the stuff I was talking about. http://www.deltakits.com/dki-catalog/derma-shield.html Quote
