Frank Gooz Posted June 1, 2023 Report Posted June 1, 2023 I am looking for a spring compressor to use on my 1948 Desoto. The one I own I think is for the outside. would someone send me a brand and part number please. Napa, and O Riley’s have been no help. Thank you Frank Quote
Los_Control Posted June 1, 2023 Report Posted June 1, 2023 Hrm not sure what you are looking for. I use these to change the struts on my wife car, they are for the outside of the spring. I assume they would work for coil springs? There is a guy on youtube I watch, he uses a threaded rod with some flat bars through the middle of the springs to collapse them. To be honest mine are pretty cheap $30, I would rather have these instead of some home made threaded rod. https://www.amazon.com/8MILELAKE-Macpherson-Strut-Spring-Compressor/dp/B016XUXMC8/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=spring+compressor&qid=1685643377&sr=8-1 Quote
Sniper Posted June 1, 2023 Report Posted June 1, 2023 I have never used coil spring compressors. I just use a jack, even on struts. Quote
Dave72dt Posted June 1, 2023 Report Posted June 1, 2023 You should be able to rent an internal spiring compressor at most parts stores. Los Control's compressor is an external unit designed for strut type springs. The use of a jack only would have been fairly common back in the day. I tend to believe the development of these compressors came as the result of some spring removals gone painfully wrong. Quote
Sniper Posted June 1, 2023 Report Posted June 1, 2023 Spring compressors go painfully wrong as well. It's all in paying attention to what you are doing. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 2, 2023 Report Posted June 2, 2023 Use the floor jack under the lower A-arm way to R&R the coil springs. 1 Quote
Frank Gooz Posted June 2, 2023 Author Report Posted June 2, 2023 The hole in the lower control are is my stopping point. the jack method will not work as the engine is not in the car. I thank everyone for there input. Frank Quote
kencombs Posted June 3, 2023 Report Posted June 3, 2023 Not that I'm recommending this to others, but it's worked for me. Chain over the frame, under the jack. 1 Quote
