Alexander Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 what off-the-shelf product do you guys use as a gasket to seal the floor pan. The orginal product was some kind of felt. Anything at Home Depot that might work? Thank you- Quote
Young Ed Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 I and I think Don C used this foam stuff with adhesive on the back. Its peel and stick. Comes from the hardware store. Nomal use is between toppers and the bed on pickups. Quote
Alexander Posted October 17, 2007 Author Report Posted October 17, 2007 thats is a good idea, however I think I would prefer something with out an adhesive backing. what do you think? any other thoughts or ideas? Thanks Quote
Young Ed Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Don't peel the paper off the adhesive Quote
40phil41 Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 On my '40 Dodge I used the Eastwood string type caulking. Makes a good seal but not too friendly if you are planning on taking the floor out often. Phil Quote
Brendan D25 Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 On my floorpan I bought a piece of sheet rubber and cut it into strips. Where I had joins I used silicone sealer. I punched out the holes for the bolts with a hole punch. The rubber I used is used in industrial applications as gasket material and is a brown colour, can't remember the thickness. I would be hesitant to use foam as it might soak and hold moisture. Brendan. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 How about cutting up an old inner tube? Lots of pliable thin rubber there. Quote
greg g Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Pick up cap mountng tape is stick one side. Comes in different widths, bet if you took your piece to a place that sells and installs them they would cut and sell you what you need for a few bucks. Quote
55 Fargo Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 This is exactly what I used, works great, has a plastic coating on 1 side and adhesive on the other, goes around bends very easily too..........Fred Quote
Alexander Posted October 17, 2007 Author Report Posted October 17, 2007 inner tube- nice idea. what is cap mounting tape? Thanks Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 I and I think Don C used this foam stuff with adhesive on the back. Its peel and stick. Comes from the hardware store. Nomal use is between toppers and the bed on pickups. Yep, that is what I used. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Interesting Don. I used the same material but the opposite way. I stuck it to the car not the removable piece. I suppose it doesn't make much difference. BTW off to the Upull yard after work-may just come home with a 5spd Quote
greg g Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 It is an Item used as an anti rub/anti squeek between pick up beds and the aftermarket caps. They usually stick it to the top of the bed rails, then put the cap down on it. The caps are typically attached with a "C" clamp type deal so the owners can take them off and on. Basically a foam weather strip style deal but flatter and wider. There are several widths of weather stripping available that have adhesive on one side that might work as well also. Quote
RobertKB Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 I've used black weatherstripping about an inch wide and sticky on one side. Very similar to the stuff you put between the cap and truck body as shown by Don. Put the sticky side on the floor. Had the removable part out a couple of times and everything works well. Quote
vanbuskirk Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 I hosed the bottom side of the pan after I installed the truck camper strips. It still leaked. I added butyl caulk beneath the rubber to finish the seal. The poor seal of the floor pan is why the floors rusted through. Water came in and couldn't get out. Bob Quote
Alexander Posted October 18, 2007 Author Report Posted October 18, 2007 Thanks guys. its amazing how much is out there. I was getting ready to user an inner tube, when my wife asked me to pick up a few light bulbs. I went over to Lowes (home improvement supper store), to pick up a Few bulbs, and by chance noticed a product that would work perfectly for my application. Its the exact felt weatherstripping i was looking for. 1.25" wide and comes in a 17' role (non adhesive). Thank you for your inputs Alex Quote
