austinsailor
I just acquired an A-833 4 speed overdrive, thinking of putting it into my 36 Desoto Airflow. Shouldn't be that much different than other mopars of that era. Anyone done it? First glance, pattern appears to be quite a bit different, probably needs an adapter. The bearing retainer is probably a different diameter. Won’t know for sure until I pull the old one. i’ll have to strip the transmission and repair the case before I get too far along. Seems the shipper, besides losing it for 5 weeks, dropped it and broke it around the reverse shift shaft!

Sniper
Ouch, I know the Aok boys sell an adapter. Is that a cast iron or aluminum case?
austinsailor
Aluminum, 23 spline. Guts look real good, but will probably be putting in new bushings, at least on the countershaft, since it’s coming apart.

greg g
Is that the A833?? They had side mounted shift linkage?? Is this supposed to be an OD? If a regular 4 speed what are you looking to gain? Edited November 18, 2020 by greg g

They started out with external linkage by the time I bought my 85 D100 the OD came as a top loader with internal linkage Edit the above information is incorrect I got my transmissions mixed up, the A833 has always been a side shifter. austinsailor
External linkage, overdrive. Gain 20 mph on the highway. Built Dec 1970. Edited November 18, 2020 by austinsailor
Plymouthy Adams
my 81 A833 is aluminum also, shifter lever reversed makes third as now fourth gear position and 4th is used as third. IT is the miser OD package The aluminum cases were not the highest quality in many aspects with the lay gear internal rear bushing one that gets hogged out in use over time....they are repairable but costly and I think there is but one company reworking the case. Check you case over real close..

The A833 was always a sideshifter

Sniper
I've grunted both into place over the years and the NP435 is a monster, short but very stout. It's a tough transmission that is for sure.

greg g
So what is the trans pictured that the OP said was damaged by the shipper and shows as a top loader? Is it the one that is to be replaced or the replacement?? It isn't a a833. Edited November 18, 2020 by greg g
austinsailor
It’s not a toploader.
austinsailor
Well, crap! The reverse shifter arm is also broken. I hope it hit the guy’s toe when he dropped it!

They were just close up views of where the reverse rod goes on the bottom left rear of the case. if you look at the picture of it on the pallet, it’s sticking out just under the right bottom of the side cover. greg g
Pictures1 and 2 looked like where the shifter lever would connect to a late 30s floor shifted trans. Guess the closeup caught me out.
wayfarer
The way it is strapped to the pallet I am surprised that it even made it to you....hopefully the shipper is paying for the repair.
