My r 10 instaled last year does not engage under 45 mph. The literature on the unit suggests the cut in should occur at 35 or so.  It's fine on the interstate, but it is in and out a lot on the surface roads.  Is there an adjustment that can be made to the governor to get it to engage and stay in at lower speed?

Remove the governor for cleaning inside.

It supposed to take a Very special wrench for removal, but just grip the governor housing using some channel locks right at the  wide part just above the slimmed down lower part and turn counter clockwise and unscrew it, forgot to mention remove the wire!

Clean it out well inside after removing the top outer plate. Using brake clean or similar Blow out the insides with air. May need to do this several times to get the old hard grease out out between the flyweights inside the housing.

lightly grease with moly grease or light oil. Do Not overdo  this !   Wipe any excess off!

On the top plate you will see a set of points. Lightly clean them. Using a multi-meter make sure contact is made when closed, housing to wire connection.

This should make the governor work at 25-28 MPH. like the manual says.

Enjoy.  ?

the problem certainly seems to be in the governor.  If the nut holding the  output flange is loose, the speedometer worm gear can slip which will affect the governor too but you would notice slow speedometer readings too.

The governor units are often  the same on other cars using the R10 and the drive gear can be swapped from  one governor to another.

I think you are confusing my signature for a comment... I can't see how you would be commenting on my wanting to learn more about an R10 OD.

It has been a while since I had my apart. It has been working fine for a decade or more.

I do remember something about a big copper washer-gasket on the bottom of the governor that if it was not there would allow it to be screwed too deep and cause an issue...

There is no governor gasket/O-Ring listed in any parts books or MTSC booklets.

I have always sealed the threads with Permatex # 1 sealant.

The governor must screw all the way down into the case to control shaft end play.

Check with Randy Rundle at his web site (fithaveinternetgarge.com) He is a great source for info and replacement parts for overdrives.
