Hello all:

I was wondering if anyone has sourced a modern mechanical fuel pump replacement in the 218 Plymouth 25" engine? I can get an original style pump quite easily with the glass bowl, however I would like one without the glass bowl if possible - especially for extra clearances.

The original style is available from Spectra premium and is part number  SP1296MP.

Any suggestions?

Mike.

why not the one with the glass bowel. The glass bowel is not an issue. I have a 588 AC pump on my 39 Desoto and do not have any issues with clearance.  Also the glass bowel lets you know when you have sediment in the line and not hard to take  on and off the FP.

Well the first pump model that I was told to get had the glass bowl out the side which would have hit the exhaust pipe on the split manifold. That pump was used on Dodge trucks so I found out....I should have clearance above the pump so may try the 1296. I'll check the Rock auto site but so far searches have not come up with anything.

Rock Auto lists the 1296 pump into the late 50's. I am going to fly with that one and see how it goes...probably not an issue. Funny that they show out of stock....easy to get here (Canada).

The current pump I have has no glass bowl at all which is kind of what I was looking for. Until I take it out I can't tell what it is, and have no idea if it ever worked properly as I had fuel problems for the brief time I drove the car before tear down. I think I will be fine with the vertical bowl style. My exhaust area is somewhat different than yours. Out of curiosity what fuel pump is that?

You can wade through the pics and see the engine build......

If you actually bought that truck one you can try rotating it. I believe you can split the two parts of the case and then rotate the bottom out to straight or maybe even towards the front of the car.

Exchanging the pump for the 1296 shouldn't be a problem since I have not used the truck one and it is new in the box...took measurements before unpacking it and kept the receipt!

Fuel is 10% alcohol. Get past the gasoline taste and it mixes well with water or on the rocks.

Guess that explains the fire hydrant pit stops!

Give E-85 a try in your drinks. More Bang for the buck.

Guess I should have skipped the subtlety, and just said wrong receipt/part #

Don and his fuzzy math and foggy glasses...

guy meets another guy carrying a bag.....what is in the bag the first guy asks...man replies, fuel pumps for a flathead Mopar.....first guys then asks, if I guess how many pumps are in the bag can I have one?  Man replies...if you guess how many fuel pumps are in the bag you can have all four of them.  First guy then says, are there three pumps in the bag.
