animal8324 Posted September 2, 2015 Report Posted September 2, 2015 My 50 Plymouth with the 3 speed started an intermittent clicking/grinding noise kinda like the teeth on the flywheel are hitting something, coming from the transmission shortly after I tested the burnout improvement from my 251 Swap. I'd like to see what ya'll think it might be? After driving around all day today I figured out it clicks/grinds at 28-35 in any forward gear or neutral while rolling and clutch position does not matter but it seems more likely to occur with the clutch depressed. It will not click if I'm stopped and rev the engine with clutch in or out so I do not think it is an issue with the clutchpack or flywheel. I also had it up on jackstands and at 30 it still clicks. I could not figure out exactly where from because I was alone. I also topped of the fluids which were admitedly neglected as well. Quote

animal8324 Posted September 2, 2015 Author Report Posted September 2, 2015 Jerry I thought it was the starter too but if it was it should click when I rev the engine but it only happens while rolling. Don I used the bell housing, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and flywheel that was in my plymouth. The only thing I swapped was the 251 spitfire from a 50 chrysler. And because it only happens while rolling I don't think it has anything to do with the clutch pack/bellhousing. When I first heard it I thought throught bearing yesterday but if it was that I should be able to get it to click while stationary but it only happens while rolling. I did forget to mention as well I drove it for a week after the swap with no issue until I did the burnout. I also noticed today that getting into first and second seem harder than normal. It may just be my mind playing tricks on me but it's worth mentioning. Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 in doing the burnout you could well have lifted the engine a bit higher than normal...and in doing so shifted the drive train a bit....I would look for items in the e-brake setup and for alignment issues of the engine and tranny to centerline Quote

Sharps40 Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 (edited) Well, since its only noisy when the wheels are moving as you stated up front (both on the ground and in gear on stands) Check the transmission and all the components from trans back. Especially check the transmission (inside) and u-joints on the drive shaft. My guess is burn outs have bunglefutzed the transmissions guts or the u-joints. Once fixed, might consider that burn outs with 65 year old running gear is a high risk of failure activity. Just sayin..... Edited September 3, 2015 by Sharps40 1 Quote

Dodgeb4ya Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 I used to try and do some burn outs in my 51 plymouth when I was started driving. 2nd or 3rd time I broke a tooth on 1st gear and the cluster. Never did that again. Quote

Ulu Posted September 3, 2015 Report Posted September 3, 2015 I abused my old Plymouth transmissions a lot, and I thought they were pretty solid units. HOWEVER: If you're getting wheel hop on a burnout, stop! It can take the power of a burnout, but it can't take the pounding of hard wheel hop. Mine needed traction aids to do a proper burnout without hop, because stock it was rather underdamped and undersprung. . Quote
