I will rephrase the question, to wit: as I recall in the'50's one could purchase a rear window warning light bar which had three colors, red, green and yellow. When the driver let up on the fuel, the yellow light would come on. 1) was there such a device, and 2) if so how was it controlled?

as you saw fit to go back and change your question by completely wiping it out...it is apparent it was not just a simple question with a simple answer...but I was going to add...did you not install a tach?  just what is its purpose beside just being mounted inside the cab?

What exactly are you after. There are gauges on the dash. I assume you want to add a warning light for one of those functions. Water temp and oil pressure idiot lights can be added by teeing in a sender set up for a light and wiring in an indicator light. Charging circuit can be done too if needed.

I think it's a Stadco traffic light that hangs in the car rear window and it's colors of green red and amber are controlled by the gas  and brake pedals PP is talking about.

Barton also makes them.

I have a Barton version, but no controls, light only.

I am going to wire using a relay and a mechanical brake light switch.

They do appear on EBay once in a while.

what you are now referring to is a vacuum activated light bar that shows red for low vacuum..heavy throttle..no economony...yellow for the light throttle but still relevant level of vacuum and green when you are at crusie..where torque is enough at the RPM/load to allow for economical operation at max advance..decal will always be green as that is when your vacuum is at the peak level

There could have been any number of novelty items such as the one you mentioned. I suspect vacuum operated switches for the yellow and green and the brake switch for the red

The truck goes to my daughter, as you know, so I would like such a warning light on the back of the truck. Modern drivers are not accustiomed to low tail lights so such a device might be helpful in Indianapolis, IN traffic.  Such is my interest. Thanks for your patience and the suggestions.

Why not simply add a high mounted third brake light, LED, switch to LEDs in the existing lights. I can't think of a good reason to take up rear view window space and visibility with a novelty that would merely confuse anyone looking at it.

PP the busses here in central NY have no green light on the back (probably not legal), but they do have yellow lights that come on when the bus is slowing and red when the brakes are on. I agree that a high center mounted brake LED and LED tail/brake lights is probably the best solution. If you're dead set on making the yellow/green lights work you'd need a switch that senses when the throttle is closed and another to sense when the brake pedal is depressed - mechanical switches are available on ebay. Wire the yellow light to come on when the throttle is closed and the brake is NOT depressed. Use the regular brake light circuit to energize the red light (straight from the brake switch, not through the signal light switch.

I'm not pursuing this idea for it was more of an inquisitive one than a real intent. One could put a sensor on the foot pedal mechanism so that when one removes his foot, the sensor activates a yellow light(s) and wired correctly when the brake pedal is applied, the yellow(s) turn off, maybe!
