Greg F Posted February 22, 2015 Report Posted February 22, 2015 Guys, Just purchased a trunk lid similar to the one pictured for my 47 plymouth four door sedan. Was told it was for a 46-48 chrysler, which I just assumed would fit my plymouth. But as usual I was wrong, seems to have a little more arc than my trunk lid. Looks like it might be for a desoto, are trunk lids different for the different chrysler models? Thanks as always...UGH! Quote
skchandler Posted February 22, 2015 Report Posted February 22, 2015 I still have mine for sale. Sorry to soon? Been there more than once, bough rocker trim off a 48 dodge, was the wrong shape and size. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 22, 2015 Report Posted February 22, 2015 I don't think there are any body parts for 46-48 Dodge, Desoto, or Chrysler that will fit a 46-48 Plymouth. The Plymouth is a smaller car. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 22, 2015 Report Posted February 22, 2015 the larger sisters will interchange....that being Dodge Desoto and Chrysler..the Plymouth is a smaller body all around though it does seem to have the same basic shape and appearance..so yes..you have purchased a part you cannot use..the decklid will overlap the Plymouth all around Quote
BigDaddyO Posted February 22, 2015 Report Posted February 22, 2015 On the plus side, it looks like it's in good shape. Quote
jcmiller Posted February 22, 2015 Report Posted February 22, 2015 You can download a body and sheet metal cross reference here http://www.pwchryslerclub.org/resources.html It covers all 4 divisions from 1940-48. 1 Quote
Greg F Posted February 23, 2015 Author Report Posted February 23, 2015 Wow, I did not know that Plymouth was smaller than the rest. Oh well, if anyone needs a deck lid for a Dodge, Desoto, or Chrysler, its for sale and willing to deal. As always, thanks a lot for all the great info. Greg Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 I can tell you that your deck lid came from a 46-48 DeSoto, but may fit a Chrysler or Dodge. Quote
Frank Elder Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 I can tell you that your deck lid came from a 46-48 DeSoto, but may fit a Chrysler or Dodge. It fits all 3..from the firewall back to the rear gravel pan....it's the same exact body. The front clips are different, hoods, dashes and tail lites all differ...but that's it. Plymouth is the smallest cousin of the four. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 I think the trunk handle is the same among all four. Quote
Captain Neon Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 I see reproduction Fulton sunvisors on eBay quite often. They are either for Dodge or Chrysler. Will the Dodge sunvisors fit on a Plymouth? Quote
Frank Elder Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 Fultons are adjustable to fit many size cars. 1 Quote

Greg F Posted March 5, 2015 Author Report Posted March 5, 2015 Looking at the body parts manual that jc miller posted, it looks like the trunk lid from a 46-48 Dodge sedan will fit a Plymouth. Both parts are numbered 23-19-8. Am I missing something? Thanks Greg Quote
Dave72dt Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 That is the part "type " and "section" number and all vehicles with the same type part will be listed under that section. They will then be broken down in that section by individual models if different. Each will have a specific part number. Quote

Each will have a specific part number. what Dave says..trust me..it will not fit...long ago I posted a picture of this very scenario for those who thought they were all the same as I fit a Dodge lid onto a Plymouth body.....huge huge difference in the Dodge and Plymouth in physical size though similar in appearance..look are deceiving Quote
Greg F Posted March 5, 2015 Author Report Posted March 5, 2015 Thank you for clarifying that for me. Just was speaking to a gentleman who has a dodge trunk lid and said the numbers matched. Will just keep looking for a plymouth lid. Thanks as always for all the great info...Greg Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 measure your opening left to right...and if the lid is wider you can be assured it is a big sister part...no need to look at it front to rear... Quote
Niel Hoback Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 Ask the seller to measure the width, it could be from a Plodge and you can use it. Quote
Roadkingcoupe Posted March 5, 2015 Report Posted March 5, 2015 Thank you for clarifying that for me. Just was speaking to a gentleman who has a dodge trunk lid and said the numbers matched. Will just keep looking for a plymouth lid. Thanks as always for all the great info...Greg I was interested in finding out the measurements of the trunk lids for 1940's PDCD Plymouth Dodge Desoto and Chryslers That way I could confirm some applications and interchangeability. Any chance you could measure the trunk lids/openings? Would be interesting to see if it matches a 1940 / 1941 & a 1942 Plymouth trunk lid The problem with part numbers is that the trunk lids have different part numbers not because they wont work but because the holes for medallions, light, license plate holders and trunk handles are sometimes in a different location and therefor Chrysler provided a different part number for the same basic trunk lid. I would like to use the measurements to confirm the fit and application. In addition the 1940 Dodge for example had a "ridge" that was used as a divider for the common two tone paint schemes. Although the trunk lid would work on another car the "ridge" makes undiserable as a replacement for a Plymouth. Looking forward to measurements. Possibly three horizontal measurements (top, middle, lower) measured with a flexible tape and a vertical measurement straight down the middle (using a flexible tape following the contour of the trunk). Thanks in advance for any info. Quote
