Jerry Roberts Posted January 5, 2015 Report Posted January 5, 2015 All you have to do is wash the horse hair section in kerosene to clean it. It's easy. I'd never give up the oil bath air cleaner as it gives the car some of its personality and makes it different from modern era cars. I'd also never change over to a 12 volt negative ground system for the same reason. You can't really see the horse hair very well . After 60 or 70 years a guy could wonder how well it is holding up and if there is any dirt build up around the edges that hasn't been washed clean . Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 5, 2015 Report Posted January 5, 2015 Who was that guy who said this issue has been cussed and discussed many times? How about a poll so everyone can vote? Bottom line is each owner must make up there own mind on what to do. Is it time to start another fuzzy dice thread? Quote

pflaming Posted January 5, 2015 Report Posted January 5, 2015 Not much interested in 'fuzzy dice' but may be interested in a "Plymouthty" bobble head and a thread to wit. LOL Quote

Robert Horne Posted January 5, 2015 Report Posted January 5, 2015 Ok,,,,,oiled foam over a K & N.......inside the oil bath filter housing. Jeff I am with you on this one Jeff. My cycle came with a foam filter, lasted 9 years, and then I replaced the foam filter with a foam filter I cut from a couch cushion, that was still good for 8 more year when I sold the bike.... The carbs still looked like new inside... Quote
Dan Hiebert Posted January 5, 2015 Report Posted January 5, 2015 Personal preference, I'd say, along with originality considerations for points and such. The main reason I have a paper element filter on the D24 is that it did not have an air filter at all when we got it, and I already had a period aftermarket paper element filter on hand. Haven't even bothered to look for an oil bath filter for the car. The shows we take it to don't care if the car has an original air filter or not. As Don notes, there has already been quite a bit of discussion regarding which is more efficient, but I don't remember the arguments for or against, and will defer to an appropriate search before I stick my foot in my mouth..... central52 Posted January 6, 2015 Author Report Posted January 6, 2015 curious, When going up or down a steep hill, what happens to the oil in the housing? Does it get sloshed around everything? Ed Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 If you made an attempt in your Dodge to climb a hill steep enough to upset the oil in the air cleaner I think you would be way to busy with other issues to worry about it. 1 Quote
_shel_ny Posted January 6, 2015 Report Posted January 6, 2015 (edited) Any hill your car is capable of climbing will not result in the loss of oil from the air cleaner housing EDIT: I suppose I should add that is base on the assumption that it is not severely overfilled. JohnTeee Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 I've still got my original Oil Bath Filter, in pretty good shape. Cleaned up and modified a spare filter that was in kind of sad shape. Here's my results and the air filter cartridge that I used. Be sure your filter is tall enough. Otherwise the bottom edge of the top will suck down to the base and block airflow. Of course, you could always go up higher removing the sides of the top. John Quote

Robert Horne Posted January 7, 2015 Report Posted January 7, 2015 Green. You can go green with K & N air filters for $40, and gain a lot of HP, ( what I read anyway). Purple mushrooms are not bad looking,, also washable... Quote
