Differential Carrier Gasket - Replacement

Recommended Posts

The gasket/seal between the axle housing and differential carrier on my B2B is leaking oil pretty badly. I've lived with this problem since day one, but now it's flowing quite freely and I think it's time to do something.  I expected to have to drop the drive shaft and split the housing from the carrier.  As I look at the axle and carrier, it appears as though the axles will need to be pulled out, at least a little, to free up the pumpkin and allow a new gasket to be installed.  Am I correct on this?  When I've gone this far is there anything else I should look at/replace?

You are correct you need to pull the axles. So while you're at it axle seals and give the axle bearings a good looking at. While you have the carrier out you're pinion seal will be much easier if thats leaking.

Jim if you prefer to fix the leak for the summer and probably much longer without the further tear down at this point, but if you have not checked the bearings etc. you may still do so, later this winter. I have an old way to deal with the third member gasket only...

Remove the third member bolts and break loose and move forward as far as possible-pry bars etc,  jack under drive line to level.. Scrape gasket off and clean surface as best as possible. You may have 1/2"-3/4" to work with, but it's enough.

Have on hand- some medium to heavy weight string that's been coated in permatex liquid gasket goop .Wrap arround the outer dia. of rear end studs 3 times and push toward the rear housing. Reinstall the third member and tighten nuts.

Did this many times on 3/4T-5T cranes back in the 70's.

Did I forget to say clean around the rear end 3rd. member first?

Good idea! This should go in the technical tips section.
