Politically correct, or new kind of winter.

So what's the deal?

For years we have had Alberta clippers, and Saskatchewan screamers. Now we have a "polar vortex".

Are we trying to be politically correct, and not offend our neighbors to the north with offensive names for the fresh air that they send us, or is this a new phenomenon?

I do not remember any references to a polar vortex in past winter seasons.

Done any look up on those names? The weather people have been using "polar vortex" since the 1950s internally just the popular press never took it up.

Don't know about other parts of the country, but the National Weather Service 7 day forecast is correct here a lot more than half the time. It is actually remarkably good given that there aren't a whole lot of reporting stations to the west of here in the Pacific where our weather generally comes from.

I googled it before posting, but passed over the Wikipedia, (can't always believe what is there anyway) and looked at many other results noting that they were all recent stuff 2013, 2014

Seems "polar vortex" was defined as early as 1853 :)

-22, -29,-22, -27. Glad I got my furnace installed, and running this week.

I checked. Not a carcinogen in California. ;)

But I can report that today I had to wear a long sleeve shirt during the day for the first time in months.  Dang that Vortex!!!

Seriously though, I've heard from friends on the east coast and DC  as well as the reports on the news and I hope things improve soon.

Wait a few years and a polar vortex will be declared a carcinogen just like talcum powder.

You post about talcum powder you get ads about skin cream ...

12 degrees and sunny here in southwest Missouri today (Thurs).  Snow still on the ground and side streets -- main roads pretty

clear.  And it seems we have a lot more wind than we used to.
