Some knob refurbishing

very nice job, maybe a good close up for everyone of one knob.  I could see you getting some side $ if people like your work enough.

LOVE the bold orange myself.

When I was in high school my buddie backing into my b1b drivers door a month after I had finished the first rebuild.  I went to my local junk yard and grabbed a new door, had it painted and replaced it.  I washed that truck weekly (to impress the girls) and after SEVERAL years I noticed there was a difference in the doors, the bend did'nt go all the way to the back.  I am sure you are all thinking how could you possibly not notice, my only excuse is that when I was washing my truck I was thinking of how my night may end.  One more excuse was there was no internet web site back then.

Here is a picture of my best knob along with what they looked like when trying to paint the letters. I used an oil base spray can appliance grade for the black. Then tried to paint the letters with a water base paint so I could remove the excess. I did learn that the knobs on the 1 and 2 series were made of a much higher quality material than the 3 series. Not looking for a job refurbishing knobs but would trade anybody 2 knobs that they needed for one good heater knob.

Earlier in this thread JBNeal brought up using a gener-nator for a 12 volt conversion. Being my normal naïve self I had never heard of such a thing. On the internet I have found two sources, Powermaster PowerGen and Don's Starters & Alternators. Does anyone have any experience with these or any words of wisdom I need to know? Just considering it at this time, looks like plenty of money, around $400, but what else is new.

My only experience would be older farm tractors. I have seen many of these still working but the vast majority have had the generator replaced with an alternator. I am not knowledgeable enough to debate the advantages or disadvantages. Why would you want to stay with the 12 volt generator? Thanks Don for the input.

You probably won't have to make brackets to mount it and without close inspection will look correct

The gener-nator is an alternator rebuild inside the case of the generator. It would use the brackets already present also and visually look like a generator. I was wondering if anyone had ever used one and how effective they were. I assume the reason to use a 12 volt generator is because they would cost less.

Alternators are used for the same reasons they're used on modern cars.  They  got used on tractor conversions because they're plentiful and cheap, unlike 12 v generators for ag use which are neither plentiful or cheap.  It's still fairly easy to find suitable cores to do a 12v generator conversion on the cars and trucks.  Gener-nators have been around for a while and I guess they work.  You could probably locate and rebuild several gens for the price of one them.

Hubcap cleaned and taped off. Going to use the same hemi orange paint on the hubcaps. I started with only one acceptable cap off of 3 pickups. It took 7 caps (3 separate purchases from E-bay) for a grand total of $115 to get three more acceptable dishes. You just got to love E-bay, you never know for sure what you have purchased until it arrives on you door step.

I can relate well to that Larry - I think at last count I had 14 Desoto Hubcaps for my 52 truck down at the shed. I did manage to find 5 hubcaps good enough to re-chrome amongst them.

Out of three pickups I hade no good rear fenders. One pickup had heavier gauge fenders that had been made by some local shop.post-5627-0-36685600-1417377263_thumb.jpg

I went with fiberglass rear fenders from Horkys.post-5627-0-72970600-1417377412_thumb.jpg

Rubber based paint (generic Rhino liner bed coating) was applied on the undersides to reduce damage from gravel roads. Also added an extra brace on the rear to reduce vibration damage.post-5627-0-13947900-1417377807_thumb.jpg
