New Fuel neck to fender seal....problems

Recommended Posts

Just received my, Steele Rubber, fuel neck to fender seal. Have to say I'm not impressed. Fits the filler neck fine, loks good from the top, but it has so little material on the underside of the grommet, that it won't grab, or seal against the fender. Just flops around.

Anyone else have issues with one of these?

I don't understand why these companies that specialize in rubber products can't reproduce a part exactly (or a lot closer than I've received) like the original. Not trying to slam any one company in particular, I've had bad luck with a couple.....be it a cowl vent listed for my EXACT car/model/year/etc. & the fit is not even close.....or something as simple as a taillight or license plate light mounting pad that I have had to add a hole &/or stretch while tightening the mounting bolts just for it to fit half a$$. The parts aren't cheap either. Ok......rant over.

krusn64 on ebay makes two different styles of the gas tank fender

grommets.......one of which is right for a P15, and another for the

little newer models. You should be able to contact him to ask

at krusn64@aol.com A good guy.

Anyone have a fender with the gas tank seal out that they could measure...Dodge, Plymouth, Desoto, Chrysler? I'm wondering on the size of the hole. Mine is almost 3" round. The new fender seals lower lip is barely a hair over 3".

I have the grommet out right now on my '51 Dodge D39 which is a Canadian model and based on the Plymouth. I measure the hole at 2 15/16". Measured several times and could not get 3". Can't measure the grommet and it was rock solid and broke into pieces which are now in the local dump. The grommet did appear to be different than the one on my '48 and sits on the fender a bit differently as there is a slight recess in the fender for it and the fuel filler. Hope this helps.

Hi TC, I used a Roberts , it was a tight fit, my fender hole opening would be the same as yours.

Nt sure if the Plym line for 46-1st49s would be the same as the Chrysler,Desoto, big Dodge, which shared the same rear fenders. The 2nd 49-51, probably is not the right size either.

The new rubber grommet should have plenty of material on underside, to fit snug against back side of fender. It should squeeze in tightly, then rest in against backside of fender.

If they don't help, send it back, and try a cheaper one from Roberts

You should expect good service from Steele. The locking piece they sent with my rear widow seal was wrong. I sent them a drawing of what it should have been and they sent the right thing right away. Granted, it should have been correct to begin with, but they acted fast and congenially to fix the situation.

You should have Steele part#40-0043-39 and not the later style 70-1616-39. At least my catalog states this..

Yup that is the one I received...not even close to fitting "snug".

I'm dealing with their customer service right now. To me it looks like it's a defective part....or poorly crafted. If they can't provide me with a good piece I'll go with the Roberts one as suggested.

Thanks again for the help!

Used a Steele Rubber fuel filler tube grommet on my D24. It fits good and looks good.

I sent them a bunch of pictures and they are "looking into the problem".  I'm probably just going to send in the piece I got for a refund...and then go with a Roberts unit.

If you could marshal your patience, all that probably happened is the wrong one got sent,.... let steele fix the problem, you will find yourself with a superior product to roberts.

That is EXACTLY what I did after I purchased one of their cowl vent rubber seals (through ebay....same price as from them directly through their catalog, but free shipping). I sent pictures of my cowl vent with the seal placed on it & there was a DEFINITE difference. They sent me a return shipping label & refunded my money. Funny thing is, they STILL have it listed on ebay for my EXACT year/make/model car. I've heard of mid year changes on vehicles.....is it possible that Plymouth would change the shape of their cowl vent mid year(1938)????? I might try another suppler & keep my fingers crossed.

Nope it's the right item....even stamped with the Steele part number.  So unless it's a bad seal that got through quality control...I can't see it being any different.

try CLesters.  I got stuff from them for both Plymouth and Studebaker.  I believe there are only 2 or 3 places repoping this stuff, but they may have different suppliers than Steele.  I also got some rubber pieces from Roberts and found them to be of good quality.
