Dodgeb4ya Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 Could you let us know if there is any difference in the smoothness of the engine after you get done removing the fluid drive coupling? The FD coupling helps absorb some vibration and harmonics too. A good running stock Chrysler straight eight should have no vibrations and when at idle you can balance a nickel on edge on the head of the engine. Have done it many times on my 1946-8 C39 cars. The eights are a whole different class of engine compared to the smaller Chrysler Corp six cylinder flatheads. They are extremely smooth and quiet. I've never seen a 1941 and up "8" running a regular flywheel except the "Royal" marine engines and in cranes. This is a great thread- thanks for posting! Bob Quote

Bob Hey Bob, this is right the Straight 8 is a very smooth and quiet engine, as we start this the first time we where very amazed about his running, if you do everything right (valve, ignition and so on) it runs like a modern engine. I am a fan of this engine and have a second in my parts car and also a crank, head and other parts in a wooden box in paper with oil this change on my chrysler is very respectful for my car and the engine and thats why we will build every self made part very good. I have look for 2 years before I beginn the trans change and you are right, I have not found a example for this car with flywheel Quote
greg g Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 Your efforts show that any thing that can be dreamed up can be accomplished with time effort, craftmanship, and a bit of money. Looks good under there. I noticed the flexible link in your exhaust. Are you running headers? Would like to see other pics of your engine if you get a chance. Thanks. Quote

freemansrodnrat Posted February 13, 2012 Author Report Posted February 13, 2012 there you see the 49`Chrysler New Yorker E-brake with drive shaft joint on the Plymouth 3speed we have to build a adapter because the E-brake has a bigger diameter the parts are galvanised Quote

freemansrodnrat Posted February 14, 2012 Author Report Posted February 14, 2012 this is the ready install new "forward" crossbar, it is ca. 1/2" higher to become a little more clearance to the "old" crossbar the drive shaft is to short now , this is the beginning to give it the right length Quote

normanpitkin Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 hey, i actually need a ring gear for my 48 new yorker ,is yours available? Mine is pretty used up and i would love to weld on a new one ,so i would like to buy yours if its nice and if you would like to sell it to me?I am in England so not too far!thanks william Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted February 15, 2012 Report Posted February 15, 2012 just checked... mine is passenger side, too. and i'm pretty sure it's the same tranny the factory installed 1940, so early ones are with right speedo connector and later ones the opposite? Quote
freemansrodnrat Posted February 17, 2012 Author Report Posted February 17, 2012 Here we are the trans is in the car!!! .... but ... there was a big problem with the bar under the body, we must also cut this for cleareness for the shifter also for the clutch mechanism we must build a spezial holder, because the other bell housing you see the shifter position in the cab, but I will take another shifter handle, this is very short today it gives the first drive!!! Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted February 18, 2012 Report Posted February 18, 2012 looking good! Frankie, i think it is, why? Quote
