toddbracik Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Did the dodge engine have a dipstick tube? The hole in the block of my engine is threaded so I am wondering if at one time there was one and if there was I need the length so I can fabricate something. Thanks in advance. Todd Bracik. Quote
busycoupe Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Mine does not have a dipstick tube. The dipstick sits right in the block. However, my car has a replacement engine that has a P23 block number. That is from a 1951 Plymouth. I don't know if this matters or not. Dave Quote
1940plymouth Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 Todd, I can't answer your question about your Dodge, but my '40 Plymouth has a '41 Plymouth engine in it, and the dip stick goes right into the block and doesn't have a dip stick tube Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 1939 Dodge also was without the dipstick tube . Quote
desoto1939 Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 My 39 Desoto has a dip stick tube. So maybe the 25 inch blocks had the dip stick tube and the smaller block might not of had the tube. I have a display steup of dipsticks from the 30s-50s with dip sticks that fir the Dodge/Ply and Chry/Desoto and some GM and Ford cars. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote
49roadster Posted September 26, 2011 Report Posted September 26, 2011 My 49 Dodge and 49 Plymouth have the tube. My 48 dodge truck has none. Quote
yourpc48 Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 My 47 Plymouth does not have a dipstick. The engine is the original with matching number to the title. Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 My 47 Plymouth does not have a dipstick. The engine is the original with matching number to the title. How do you check your oil? The long stick in the picture below is from my Desoto engine and a tube is required. Short stick is from my P-15 and no tube is required. Quote
toddbracik Posted September 28, 2011 Author Report Posted September 28, 2011 Thanks all. I'm guessing my engine didnt have the tube because the dipstick is short. Its just the threading made me wonder. And to answer your question Don, this is the first time I have put oil in it. i have not had to check the oil till now. Should be running and then driving soon! 1941Rick Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 Because it is a pain to put the dipstick back into the hole someone might have tapped the hole in the block. Then found out that the tube has to have a slight bend in it and you can not thread it into the block.....does that sound like experience talking? Quote
Reg Evans Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 I installed this D24 engine in my D22 coupe. It has no dip stick tube. Quote
oldodge41 Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 The D24 in my car has no tube either. Quote
Alshere59 Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 The D24 in my car has no tube either. Is that a freeze (Welsh) plug or?? Looks a lot different from anything I have seen. Quote

Yes, it was there when I got the engine, wasn't leaking so I left it alone. Been 20 years and it's still not leaking. My motto is, If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. Funny when I first got it I was constantly watching it for leaks. Hadn't thought about it for years until I took that pic. Wondered who would be first to notice it. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 I had one like that on my engine for a while , only it was reversed with the cup side in . Didn't leak either . Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 9, 2015 Report Posted February 9, 2015 (edited) This pic is of a page in the P15 Repair Manual, I think. My engine is from a 1957 Plymouth......it has a tube for the dipstick......but I don't think it's the correct dipstick. So......one time when I changed the oil, I filled the filter and then the crankcase......and then made a mark on the dipstick where the oil level came. Edited February 9, 2015 by BobT-47P15 Quote
1952B3b23 Posted February 10, 2015 Report Posted February 10, 2015 I have a 53 Plymouth engine and it has a dipstick tube. My 39 plymouth P8 engine does not have a tube. Just has a short dip stick right into the block. Quote
