Rodney Bullock Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 So I get my generator back from the shop and buy a new voltage regulator. we have a short repree from the rain( 4 days) I put everythinbg back on the car and it will not start:confused:It started with all that stuff gone off it. I checked the points and no spark. I guess with all the rain things have gotten damp?should I just wait for it to get dry? Could the coil get damp and not have spark? I don't know:confused: Quote
Chester Brzostowski Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Rodney, See if you have voltage at the coil. Do you have a volt meter? Also is your ignition fused? Maybe the fuse blew. Chet... Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted September 8, 2011 Author Report Posted September 8, 2011 chet where would a ignition fuse be? also how do you check for voltage at the coil? I do have a volt meter or multi tester Quote
Rusty O'Toole Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 Old MoPars use circuit breakers not fuses. Ignition is usually not fused. Check if power is getting to the coil with your multimeter or test light. If not back track till you find where the problem is. If power is getting to coil but no spark, take off the distributor cap and see if it is dry inside. If not, wipe it dry with a clean rag. If ignition wires are wet spray them with WD40 for temporary cure. Also spray the distributor cap after you put it back on. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted September 9, 2011 Author Report Posted September 9, 2011 You know it is raining right now and I am sure this has something to do with it. I will wait until it is dry outside. It started monday with no problem. I have some of that wire dry and will spray it on tomorrow. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted September 9, 2011 Author Report Posted September 9, 2011 When I was replacing the voltage regulator I touched the battery wire to something on the fire wall. Do you guy's think I fried the condenser? I tested to see if there is power to the dist. and there is, I am not getting power to the points so it must be the condenser right? Getting one this morning:mad:One thing after another. If I jumped off a bridge the water would be to high. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 [quote=Rodney Bullock; One thing after another. If I jumped off a bridge the water would be to high. NO...bridge would be too high and the water to shallow..(With hidden jagged rocks, snakes and gators and maybe a helgamite or two) Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 A helgamite?!??!? Give me the snakes and gators. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 Welcome to my world of what the heck happened? Do you have any spark at the points? If not than just run a hot wire from you battery to the positive side of your coil and then try it. Start with the easy stuff first! You have read allot about my adventures with my old Dodge and it not running right and I have allot of experience in that field. Or get one of those cheap in line ignition wire testers that light up and take the coil wire out and put that coil wire on one of your spark plugs and it it lights up than you know you have juice out of the coil. I believe in simplicity or is that all that I know? Guess you might just call me a simpleton!!!! Jon:D Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted September 9, 2011 Author Report Posted September 9, 2011 Ok, I have power at the positive side of the coil. It is not going beyond that point. No spark at the points. If I put a screw driver on the points tray it sparks. If I use a wooden stick it does not. I've got power at the stater relay, ignition switch. Quote

It sounds like you should check the terminals on both ends of the wire that runs from the distributor to the coil. And make sure that the wire is good and not shorting out. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted September 9, 2011 Author Report Posted September 9, 2011 I went out after posting and :)The car started right up.....as if nothing happened. I sprayed wd 40 on the points tray and the spark plug wires and it started Oh yeah happy day right...... Then the water pump started leaking all over everything:eek: I just can't cut a break! Oh well back to the drawing board. Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 NO...bridge would be too high and the water to shallow..(With hidden jagged rocks, snakes and gators and maybe a helgamite or two) And speaking of snakes, Yesterday while cutting the backyard grass I found a snake skin. Snakes grow new skin and shed the old one every so often. This snake skin was about 10 feet from my office window and it was over 6 feet long. It looked like a rattler but there were no rattles on the skin. I am sure the snake is still somewhere in the area so I will be keeping my eyes open. Quote

Rattle snakes don't shed their rattles, every time they shed their skin they add a new rattle you can tell how old the snake is by the number of rattles or so they say. Good thing the snake wasn't in the skin when you found it. Glad I live in Canada, no rattlesnakes here except the mega rare Mississauga rattler, all you have to worry about is freezing to death. Don, Spray some WD40 around the area it seems to be a cure for whatever the problem is. Chet... Quote

WD40, diesel fuel or kerosene seems to dry up the moisture if you spray or brush them on the ignition wires and cap. This is the first time I heard of WD40 sucking the water right out of the water pump. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted September 9, 2011 Author Report Posted September 9, 2011 I can't stop laughing:) That darn WD 40 It did suck the water right out of the water pump:rolleyes: Thanks Rusty O toole, it was like majic the thing just started working again. when Joe and I were playing with it everything was ok. I just could not understand why it would not have spark. I had power to the dist. so I knew something inside the dist had to have given up. When it started I was so happy then I saw the water and man Joy and pain like sunshine and rain:eek: I called Andy and told him the screws on the back of the pump were loose so he is sending me new gaskets. I will be patient this time, I will seal that thing up real good.in the meantime.......I get to drive my 55 so I'm not....that mad;) happy motoring Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 Rodney, I think I have a gasket for the back of that pump sitting here in my garage. But if you've already ordered it from Andy Burn Bomb, I guess you're all set. You can make those things in ten minutes. Quote

Glad I live in Canada' date=' no rattlesnakes here except the mega rare Mississauga rattler, all you have to worry about is freezing to death.[/quote'] We also have rattlesnakes out in western Canada. In the province of B.C., they have the "North Pacific" rattlesnake and here in southern Alberta and southwestern Saskatchewan can be found the "Prairie" rattlesnake. They are considered endangered and are protected..
