Smokeybear Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 I picked up a set of wheels for the front of my car to match the rears. I spent the better part of two days sanding and polishing all four. Before and after pic. Here's the results... I got the fronts to fit by swapping the lug bolts for lug studs. Here are the lug studs I used, Dorman products. I drilled out the holes with a 1/2 bit and used two washers and an old lug nut to pull the stud into the hole. I used an impact wrench and the whole job took about 30 minutes. The rear was done by swapping it out for an Explorer rear. All in all well worth it in my opinion. Quote
55 Fargo Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 Looks cool, those slots suit the car.......... Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Good job! In my humble opinion studs are much easier to work with than lug bolts. Plus all now have the same orientation as in righty tighty. Quote
greg g Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Hey those look great on your set up. Here is a thought, while my stainless rocker trim was being tweaked, I mounted a couple pieces of poly urethane door surround moulding from the Home Improvement store. Shaped it to look like the stock pieces, mounted the front with a screw through the fender. and mounted the rest with double stick tape. Painted them matte black. they are wide enough to hang down a bit and cover the pinch weld area below the rocker. As it turned out they were on for nearly two years, and held up well. Quote

I can't picture the moulding you're talking about, do you have a link? That sounds like a great idea. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 the slotted mags have always been my one of my all time favorites..I have s set of Shelby wheels similar to these on my Tiger.. Quote
greg g Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 very common around interior doors and widows it's the ranch casing in the picture. I mounted it thick side up. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 The wheels look good. I like the look of the car as you've left some of the original stainless trim in place. I don't care for these Plymouths with all trim removed. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Love your car! Thanks for posting! Old school and nice Quote
yourpc48 Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Love the look of your car. Like your wheels too. Satin black and stainless. That is the look Im going for as well. I havent polished and installed all my stainless yet. My wheels were donated by a friend so Im going with em for now. Quote
Andydodge Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Those wheels look great, real wheels, not those crappy large diameter ex tractor doof/doof wheels.........how can you tell I like real wheels?........attached.............andyd Quote

I looked through a lot of pictures of Plymouths with different amounts of the trim removed and decided the best look was to keep it all. I cant stand when someone paints the grille, bumpers, and headlight trim all body color. Quote

I cant stand when someone paints the grille, bumpers, and headlight trim all body color. I'm with you guys for the most part, The only trim I didn't reuse was the small strips on the grill. I thought it looks a little too busy. I didn't get the rocker trim when I bought the car but I'll be doing some improvising on that as soon as I figure something out. Quote
yourpc48 Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Very Nice. I like it without the little bars too. I however have already polished and installed mine so they are staying on for now. Quote
yourpc48 Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 I was at a cruise a while back where I saw a p15 with no brightwork at all. Shaved the gutters and door handles. I had to ask him if it was a Plymouth. He looked at me funny (I was in my 47) and said yes a 48. It looked cool but not my style. Not that I wouldnt own it I just have a thing for Chrome and Stainless. I think he lives near me and am trying to get ahold of him to see his car up close. The car was almost a fleshtone peachy color as I remember it and the name on the side of the car was NUDE. Explains the lack of shiny stuff. If I get ahold of him I will try to get pics. It is a nice car. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 The only trim I didn't reuse was the small strips on the grill. Looks to me like you welded the hood seam, got rid of the hood nose piece, and the stainless windshield trim too. Your car looks good but I also like the factory trim including the busy grill. Just my humble opinion. It is your car and as I said it looks good. Quote
oldodge41 Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 Looks real good! We always called those wheels "Aluminum Slots". One of my favorite wheels. How do you like the Explorer rear? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 I like your wheels better than the ones I have..I traded a set of 14 inch 4 luggers that I had no use for....I tweaked them a bit..removed the Progressive overlay, fabricated a mounting stem to the center and mounted the spinners Quote

Yeah I welded the seam. When I got the car it was missing the trim that ran down the center of the hood and the nose piece was in pretty sorry shape. I didn't get the windshield trim either. I did get the splash pans and bumper brackets but no bumpers. So I'll be trying to fab up something to go there too. Thanks for the compliments. Quote

I'm impressed so far. It was a pretty easy install. The rear itself went in no problem. Since I'm doing this on the cheap, I had to figure out something on the driveshaft. I ended up cutting the end off the explorer shaft and welding it onto the end of the original plymouth shaft and letting a machine shop balance it for me. It's worked out well so far considering I only have half the slip clearance I had with the original. When the flat 6 or the tranny goes I'll be putting in a V8 and I'll have a new driveshaft made then. Quote

You might try and find some 49 Plymouth bumbers. I am not sure what modifications are required to make them work but I do like the 49 rippled bumpers. Quote
