Young Ed Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 I think this one breaks the rule. Does have all its original body panels though or whats left of them. I suspect it won't have much or any after being fixed. http://www.hemmings.com:80/classifieds/dealer/mercedes_benz/220se/1195329.html&refer=news Quote

Edward Roberts Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Coupla questions on this: "1961 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Ponton Cabriolet! Here is a, 1961 Mercedes-Benz 220SE Ponton Cabriolet, has been with the same elderly gentleman since 1965 and kept in dry storage since 1973..." Has this gentleman been elderly since 1965? Doubt he has many original parts either. Was the car in this condition when he bought it? What did HE see in it? P.O.'s sure can be rough on a car. Let's say his storage costs averaged $100/month for the last 37 years... he's spent twice the asking price on MAINTAINING the car in THIS condition. Is this guy a US Senator??!! Quote
Young Ed Posted February 15, 2011 Author Report Posted February 15, 2011 I have a feeling it was nice when he bought it and went into storage in 1973 after he wrecked it. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 15, 2011 Author Report Posted February 15, 2011 Apparently its quite a rare car. Between 1961 and 1965 they built only 2729. Quote

Reg Evans Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 According to my old car price guide that car is only worth $58,000 in #1 top show condition. The same car in #6 condition is worth about $2300. This car looks like it's off the scale at about #8. Move the decimal point over and then divide by 2. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 built more of them than Sunbeam Tigers... Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 Yep, just needs a little T L C (plus several thousands of dollars) and will be like new. Quote
RobertKB Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 Rare enough that someone out there with lots of money who wants one will take on the challenge of having someone else restore it or possibly do it themselves. When I see a car like that I think of that '61 Chev convertible that sat in a ditch for 40 years and realize anything can be restored if someone wants it badly enough or wants the challenge. Quote
Greenbomb Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 He shoulda parked it at 74108. Quote
