greg g Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 (edited) In our house we have a rule, when ever someone sings the national anthem before a sporting event, we mute the volume. No disrespect for the anthem or the nation, just a premonition of the fact that no matter who it is they are gonna screw it up. I don't know where this began, trotting out the local music prodigy at the high school football game, or the pop star at big events, but give it a rest. Either play a professionally recorded version that has been vetted for a proper singing, with correct lyrics, of the nation's anthem, or play an instrumental version. And do that to show proper respect for the Nation, its Flag and its history. Christine Agulara, and all the rest of the Disney cast offs please, eminem, kid rock or any of the various country western and pop singers and groups, stuff a sock in it. Don Coatney Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 I am in agreement. What I heard yesterday was an abortion. Why do singers feel they must distort the notes and words is beyond me. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 I guess they think they gotta do the Anthem in their own "style". There appears to be no "Anthem Police". Quote
49 Dodge Dude Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 It would be nice if whoever sang it would sing it for the song, not to show of their vocal 'talents'. Christina Aguilera sounded like she had come in contact with a high voltage line or something. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Not only did she take too much liberties with the music but she couldn't even get the lyrics right. I wasn't paying much attention to it at the time but I still noticed that she flubbed it up. Merle Quote
Oldguy48 Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 It seems like every time I've heard a "professional" sing the national anthem on TV the last few years, they've either messed up the lyrics, or screeched like an alley cat with it's tail slammed in a screen door. It would be great to hear the anthem sung by a truly talented singer, giving it the awe and respect it deserves, and focusing on the meaning of the song. Not trying to impress the audience with their personal "vocal frills". Come to think of it, I doubt there are too many "professional" singers of today with the necessary talent to perform the task. Today's music "talent" is disappointing, to say the least. Quote
Paul Beard Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 IMO today's musical talent consists of screaming into a microphone while trying to sing similar to a falsetto. There are very few people out there today that can actually sing. Quote
Oldguy48 Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 Listen to this, then compare to the screeching, mangled, pathetic renditions you've heard recently. Quote
Big_John Posted February 7, 2011 Report Posted February 7, 2011 I was at a college hockey tournement with my son about ten years ago. I was off to the side near the announcer when the first game was ready to start. The annoucer asked everyone to stand and motioned for the recorded anthem to start... It didn't and the annoucer... without missing a beat said "Don't bother with it... I'll do it" and proceeded to sing the anthem a capella. He did a fantastic job! Then he launched into O' Canada for the Canadian players. A group of Canadians in the bleachers near enough to see what was going on started singing with him. It was one of those unforgettable moments. After he finished and the game started, he walked by me and I stopped him and told him what a great job he did. Quote
1941Rick Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 I agree with all the comments. As a Canadian I felt bad for out US brothers, and sisters. It all started with Rosanne Barr.....yuch....Our CFL , the other game, had the same half time entertainment for the Grey Cup a few years ago. I stopped watching halftime shows. Yesterday I was invited out to The Legion to take in the game....the only ones who enjoyed the music were the bobble heads sitting on the dashboards of cars parked in the parking lot......NFL is famous for good halftime shows and commercials. But everything has to come to an end...lets hope it does not....sorry, didn't mean to get a rant on Quote

Worked for this young lady when the sound cut out. I think the 8 yo sounds better anyway. Edited February 8, 2011 by Alshere59 Quote
wallytoo Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 aguilera messed up the anthem. she wasn't the first. and she won't be the last. not that it matters, but as i understand it, she sings the anthem at laker home games, too, so it's not like she doesn't have a fair amount of experience singing the song. i'm guessing that she doesn't screw up every rendition prior to laker games. mistakes DO happen, in all walks of life. PatS.... Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 It's a difficult song to sing, gets murdered often, but once in a while it gets nailed. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 What I don't understand is why singers now all have to do that wavery, Whitney Houston-Mariah Carey thing with their voices. I can't stand that. That was old the second time I heard it. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 A local radio host commented that it sounded like she was yodeling the anthem. I agree with his assessment. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 now that you opended that thought to the public..I can now evision a fat man in lederhosen, big fists about an alpine horn and yodeling out the anthem..finishing with the line "laid youre ole lady too."..(thrown in for our boy Bill) but then the wife say I seem to see the bad in everything.. Quote
greg g Posted February 11, 2011 Author Report Posted February 11, 2011 Well the original lyrics to the song had to do with praising wine, and the comforts it provided. It is said that it was sung as a way of telling if the singers were sober enough for yet another round. Maybe those who attempt to sing F. Scott Key's lyrics have had a few to the poit where they should be cut off, both from another beverage, and from singing........... Quote
Reg Evans Posted February 12, 2011 Report Posted February 12, 2011 This ,older than her years, young lady floors me. Google..... Jackie Evanco if you are ready to be floored. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted February 12, 2011 Report Posted February 12, 2011 I hate it when they adlib and ad stuff to the song, warbleling etc.... Tom Quote
