=PlyPals=
I know... I know... The car looks a lil' too ratty for some of you... But the general idea for posting it was showing the roof rack... Were they originally MoPar made?? Or were those mostly aftermarket? I kinda like the look... Don Coatney
It appears they put too much weight on the rack and squished the roof:rolleyes:
Plymouthy Adams
something in my mind says we have seen that picture before..one of our European neighbors had posted it or at least a link to it....maybe was fireball...
greg g
Some were probably available through the dealer, but most were aftermarket. The 8 passenger DeSoto Suburban (not a station wagon) was probably the one car that had the rack as a factory option. Maybe the Travel All aslo. That that style of rack was likely copied by aftermarket providers and mounted on other MOPAR lines.
48P15Annie
I found a '62 Fury Sedan on eBay with a roof rack: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1962-Plymouth-Fury-/180575428023?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item2a0b225db7

Don Coatney
Awesome car. Wasn't turnpike cruiser a mercury term??? Yes on both counts. The car looks very good and Mercury made a Turnpike Cruiser.
48P15Annie
Love those Turnpike Cruisers -nod nod- I think Mercury's roll down rear window is one of the coolest things ever
BobT-47P15
I gues those cars were the forerunners of station wagons with roof racks, and now mini vans and S U Vs with racks. (Had no influence whatsoever on the girls of Hooters.)

1940plymouth
A few years ago, didn't GMC use that opening roof as an option on one of their SUV's and claim it was a new inovation?
Young Ed
Yup GMC envoys had it.

busycoupe
Neil, When I was a kid my father had wooden roof racks identical to the ones in your second picture. He had them for years, used them on a 46 Chrysler, 52 Chrysler Windsor, 53 Plymouth, then cut them down to use on a 60 VW. I wonder what happened to those racks? Niel Hoback
They turned up at a rummage sale where I bought them.
Don Coatney
My dad also had a set of the suction cup racks. I think he bought them at either Western Auto or Monkey Wards.
=PlyPals=
great to see some roof racks! I always thought it was more of a VW accesory... I don't see them very often on full size cars (except station wagons or suburban-likes). just like the bugshields... Also a very common thingy on VW's... rarely seen on full size cars... Young Ed
Roof rack and bug shield equiped. Also duals with the smallest mufflers I've ever seen. Dad has now named this car Thor as in the god of thunder
