52cambridge Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 I have a 52 Cambridge and broke the bolt that holds the shift linkage arm to the frame. Where can I find one? Quote
moose Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 I don't know where you could find one, but it looks like you might be able to make your own. You could get a grade 8 bolt the size of the threads (maybe 3/8"?) and the length of the overall bolt. Then find a steel or brass tube with an inside diameter same as the new bolt, outside the size of the old bolt. A washer here or there, lube it up, and it'd be as good as new. If its only on the shift linkage, it won't be taking a lot of force and should hold up for you. Hope this helps. Quote
bobjob55 Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 (edited) try a machine shop supply store.. i think they were called stripper bolts,, or some of the agriculture - tractor supply stores.. they are still used on machinery and come in different sizes and lengths.. last one i replaced was for a hay baler.. maybe shoulder bolts is the right name... 1just4don Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 I always thought those were called shoulder bolts. (I have been wrong numerous times tho). Lawn mowers even use those for the free wheeling wheels to run on and not getting tight on that part. Yes, bushing stock and a regular bolt would do same thing,,,however not technically correct,,,but functional. Washers too if slightly too long. Quote
greg g Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 Take a look at stuff they sell t make small wagos and carts (axles) at the Tractor Supply store or similar place i your area. Also take a look at commercial fastener stores. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 check lawn mower wheel bolts also...just guess here as you did not give any dimension....if correct/larger diameter shoulder..quick turn on the lathe at the machine shop will net correct dia/length..else get a standard bolt of the length need, find a pipe/tubing of the correct diameter...cut to length and make your own shoulder bolt Quote
michael.warshaw Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 roberts motor parts or andy bernbuam. Quote
52cambridge Posted April 7, 2010 Author Report Posted April 7, 2010 The diameter of the shoulder is 9/16". Andy could not help me without a part number. I went to a fastener supply co. They did not make one in that size. Its a hard to find special order part that will cost big. I am going to try to make my own. If that fails, I will go one size up and have it machined. Thanks for all the help everyone! Quote
RobertKB Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 (edited) Are you close to any junk yards? Does any forum member have a parts car? Can anyone look this up and see if it is good for more than one year? I have one from a '54 which looks the same. The shoulder is 9/16" as mentioned. If interested PM or email me with the other dimensions and we can go from there. Same piece cleaned up Edited April 7, 2010 by RobertKB Quote
52cambridge Posted April 7, 2010 Author Report Posted April 7, 2010 I took moose's advice and made my own using grade 8, 3/8" x 2.5 in. bolt and 2 bronze 3/8" flange bearings. Put in new pins and washers. Works like new. Shifting is much more precise and tight. Robert KB, I will give you the dimensions of the shoulder bolt. I still want the original part. Thanks again for everyone's help and advice. Quote
