JIPJOBXX Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 (edited) Just wondering if anyone here remember in there long ago past if there parents towed a small trailer with a fat fendered Dodge or Plymouth? As you guys know I'm going to restore a 14 Aljo trailer but I was wondering if I could just get away with my bumper hitch. Its an older rental one that just chains on the bumper. I think it should work as that bumper is pretty tuft. Anyway just would like to know? Edited January 29, 2010 by JIPJOBXX Quote
Young Ed Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 When the tall pines region hosted a national in 1994 in faribault MN my Dad towned a 77 starmaster 6 popup with a bumper hitch behind his 50 plymouth 4dr. Quote
blueskies Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Look up member Joe Romey, he put together a great receiver hitch for his '50. Pete Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Back in about 1963 my 1st new step dad rented a trailer like yours and a clamp on bumper hitch to tow behind his 49 Caddy vert. We traveled several hundreds of miles and the clamp on hitch worked fine. Quote
blueskies Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 My rear bumper had a bumper mounted hitch on it at some point in it's past, and it bent the top edge of the bumper up and outward. I don't think I'd put a bumper hitch on my new bumper... I'm sure the bumper is strong enough to safely tow a trailer, but I'd think the bumper would be worse for wear in the end. Pete Quote
greg g Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 the clamp or chain on trailers were used in conjunction with light utility or moving trailers. I believe they were limited to about 175 lbs of tongue weight, and by rulle of thumb about 1750 lbs of combined load weight, I know I have seen more than that on them but I wouldn't recommend it. You would need to deteminr the weight and tongue weight of the trailer and add how much stuff you load into it. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted January 29, 2010 Author Report Posted January 29, 2010 Well I might just have someone make up a bolt on hitch that I can attach to the frame. I did that along time ago to 60 T-Bird I had and it worked out just fine. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 the most rearward cross member on most these cars have changed but little over the years. Making a trailer hitch for the car is a question of assumed risk as their is no engineered kit for your car..DOT may put the thumb screws to anyone with an altered non approved hitch..that being said...here is how I did mine...I adapted a receiver hitch to mine from a late model vehicle..unless my rear frame seperates the hitch should be there till the cows come home..this is 200 tongue weight with 2000 max tow weight.. I believe that this should handle about any smaller camper...quick and easy install and the receiver is positioned to be just below the bumper for the most out of sight position as possible... I do not know the original application of the hitch..saw it in a pile in the wrecking yard..grabbed it..10.00 price is right.. you cannot really see it with the car firmly on its own wheels. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 You could easily copy this in stock metal angles. I have flat-towed large cars and pulled a utility trailer with no problems. Quote
aero3113 Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Pete, is that your Razor scooter in the second pic? Quote
47heaven Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 I have photos given to me by a gentleman that had a 1947 Ply Special Deluxe and towed a 40 ft. trailer with it from Santa Monica, California to North Virginia and back in 1952. He said when he got back he had to replace the transmission...go figure. Quote
greg g Posted January 30, 2010 Report Posted January 30, 2010 Wonder how may times he had the brakes looked at during the trip. So is this proff that torque is more important than HP? Quote
