Something Old Something New Something Frozen Blue

Today it is in the twenties in Northern Virginia. The wind is gusting up to 30 MPH, which makes it feel even colder. I know that's nothing to you guys who live in cold climates, but it's brutal out there right now.

I started messing around with my 49, installing the heat control valve and just straightening out the garage a bit. Then my neighbor needed a hand replacing the starter on his 2005 Ford F250. He's helped me out a lot with various projects. Most of the time and effort was spent just trying to get at one bolt. We had to remove the entire right front wheel well to get access to it. What a pain in the neck.

By the time we were finished we were pretty much frozen. We were out there a long time. This Ford is only four years old and has had more trouble than I can keep track of.

Anyway, I've got some car projects I can do indoors while the wind is howling outside.

Joe I feel your pain. I and two of my buddies were outside in similar weather for 8 hours a couple saturdays ago changing a fuel pump in a 97 chev pickup.

Starters are the reason I no longer own an I/6 Ford. Had an '82 Granada with 200 cu in 6. When the manual says to remove the engine or remove the exhaust system and EGR valve system you know you have trouble. Laid under the car at different times for two days trying to figure how to remove the upper bolt, finially I used all of my long extensions and a wobble joint socket. Started at the front of the engine and fed the whole thing back under the exhaust system to the top bolt and removed it. Putting that top bolt back in was a challenge with the wobble joint in the works. We gave the car to a young lady for transportation to high school, after high school she gave it to her littlr brother who still drives it. I just hope the starter never goes out again as it will probably go to the crusher where it belongs.

It would have been bad enough in good weather, trying to get at that bolt. But I feel like I can't really complain when Shel says they're having a sizzling one degree up there in the wilds of New York. It's in the teens here and the wind is blowing something awful. I might monkey around with my temp sensing unit. Or I might just sit on my behind and watch football. The wife is in Puerto Rico. Just dropped her off at the airport this morning. She'll call tonight and tell me how nice the weather is there.

I was going to go outside and work on Katherine. Then I was "informed", was a little more stressed than that, that the hot water was frozen.:( So spent most of the morning in the crawl space heating pipes. Decided that laying on the ground cleaning the underside for welding did not sound so good. So I intend to sit in the chair next to the fire, relax and "keep an eye" on the pipes. By th eway I recommend if anyone else says that the hot water is going again, make sure the last of the ice is out of the system. When I told her the water was going again she jumped right in for a shower and was NOT impressed when the last of the ice worked its way out of the line.

My laughing may not have helped her outlook...

That sounds like it might actually have been a crappier job than the one I did yesterday. But at least under the crawl space you were shielded from the wind. We were out on the street with the wind tearing right up the way. I just went to Auto Zone to look for an old style temp sensing bulb and capillary tube. They didn't have it so I'm done for the day. Not going anywhere.

It's been in the mid 20s here in MO today. Had about 2 1/2" of snow

last night. Not too bad for windy, however.

A friend left the headlights of his Grand Cherokee on during church today,

and of course it ran the battery down. We went to lunch with the couple

first, then took the wives home and went back with jumper cables to

start the vehicle. It started fairly quickly and he made it back home

with no problems. Not near so bad as Joe's ordeal. Apparently we are

getting this frigid air direct from Canada......is supposed to continue with

the cold the next week or two. Ah, well. Will just keep dressing warm

and try to stay inside much as possible.

Always willing to share with our American friends.:P Still, you guys are having a heat wave compared to what we have right now. Scheduled to go to Maui soon so really don't care how crappy the weather is here.

well I must say it is bad enough when you folks leave the door open..must you leave the freezer door open also..this stuff cycles every few years..its not that uncommon..just not the norm....keeps the power/fuel folks employed

So what kind of weather are you having up there?

Not all that bad for this time of year. Been about 0F and sunny all day but no wind. Lots of snow on the ground and a bit more forecast for tomorrow. It has actually warmed up a lot from yesterday when it was windy also which made it very cold. Forecast for later in the week actually looks pretty decent. We are going to keep any warmer weather we have up here so you southern boys can toughen up a bit!:P

Yeah, right......how long you gonna be on Maui??

Were' leaving on the 9th of Jan for a week's cruise that includes stops

in Freeport and Nasau, Bahamas.

Will be nice and warm, but the bad news is, it will still be cold when we return home.

Five weeks in Maui. Wish it was longer. Wish I could move there but I don't think US immigration would like that. We try to go every two years and one or two weeks just is not long enough.

Now is that 0 degrees a dry 0? First time I went to Colorado, the teens felt like the thirties on the East Coast. The dry cold didn't seem as nasty as the damp cold.

Dry cold but with a wind it is biting cold. I know what damp cold is like as I lived in London for three years and they are different as you say.

WINTER Poem

It's winter here in Mini Sota

And the gentle breezes blow

Seventy miles an hour

At thirty-five below.

Oh, how I love Mini Sota

When the snow's up to your butt

You take a breath of winter

And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful

So I guess I'll hang around

I could never leave Mini Sota

I'm frozen to the friggin' ground!

Here in Central California we will get to about 50 degrees all week, BUT as was mentioned it is a wet cold. Our humidity will be high makes for perfect 'cold storage' weather for our navel oranges. Wet, humid, cold penetrates very fast, it is still easier living weather than Omaha and north, I know, lived in Omaha, they have NASTY weather. Its a great city but bad weather, cold in the winter, humid and mosquitos in the summer. Takes someone like Frankie to live there. :D

PS: Frankie, is Falstaff beer still in operation?

Bob & Robert takes lots of pictures. ;)

Will do if I can pull myself away from the beach, warm ocean water, cold beer, and chocolate covered macadamia nuts!:P
