Plymouthy Adams Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 seems that the railroad that runs through the end of our community has experienced a few washouts in the previous rains last week just south of us..and yet tonight it is raining as hard if not harder than before...they have run trucks of rock past my house for abut 2 days straight up to about 11PM at night..they are staging the repair off the side track that sits in front on the old warehouses that have been here since the turn of the century..these are old brick structures and in very good repair yet today...the thunder is directly overhead and just shaking the area..sky is a heck of a light show...ought to be sleeping up stair tonight but though the room is together and such..the new bedding is not yet washed..this is the only queen size bed in the house..all the rest are antique full size. oh yeah..one of the dirt road below the dairy farm outside of the community washed out..seems a local lost his entire truck into the hole..that would be a heck of an eye opener Quote
greg g Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 Was wondering about your area regarding the weather. Hope you can keep your powder dry. Quote
dezeldoc Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 Man we can use the rain, but all we get is fires and sinkholes form the water mains breaking, at least one has broke a day for the past 2 weeks!! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 22, 2009 Author Report Posted September 22, 2009 we are high and dry..I am just a couple feet lower than the highest spot in the county..less than a mile away...even in the major flood of 1994 Elko Community was still high and dry but the low areas in and out of the area are subject to swollen streams and water on the road..so far my route to and from have been clear..I am hoping for a break long enough to catch the lawn before it becomes a hayfield.. Joe Flanagan Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 That kind of weather right now would put me out of business. All my work has been outside and my garage is not big enough to do everything inside. So please keep that rain down there in the South or tell it to go off into the Atlantic and see if it can become a hurricane. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 22, 2009 Author Report Posted September 22, 2009 would not want to see you get stiffled in your repair work and would also not want to see a hurricane form that could cause some civic leaders to make massive human judgement errors for their local population that my tax dollars will have to bail them out..I refer to a situtation in the very recent past.. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 Ah, OK. Didn't read that closely enough. Funny thing about the hurricanes, though. I can think of certain tacky, overdeveloped places on the Atlantic coast that could use a good old-fashioned clock-cleaning from Mother Nature, though. This summer my wife, my daughters, and I went to a place in Delaware that I called, "The beach town that ate itself." If there was ever anything pleasant or enjoyable about that place, it was destroyed a long, long time ago. I hope the town fathers are happy. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 22, 2009 Author Report Posted September 22, 2009 overdevelopment to attract tourist quickly envelopes the community with greed and scams...the commitment to do things right is gone as the population is transit..I go out of my way to go to the out of the way places...(??) in other words..I avoid tourist attractions like the plague Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 My red light is going off at the moment, warning me that we are perilously close to another political thread. By the way, Tim, I agree with your last post. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 Well all I can say its beautiful up here in Washington today! You have all our rain and well we have all your sun. Suppose to be in the 80's today and that great! Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 in other words..I avoid tourist attractions like the plague Are you sure? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 23, 2009 Author Report Posted September 23, 2009 you got me Don...go out of your way to show an out of towner the infamous Andersonville Prison of the civil war and get marked for life..by the way..the beard is real..so this is really a historical site.. Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 Sorry Tim; You just left your self wide open for this one. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 23, 2009 Author Report Posted September 23, 2009 I guess I should have use the term "tourist trap" but yes in a way I am guilty as when company comes they often like to see the touristy places..ah..but go early in the week..avoid the weekend crowd..last place I carried company was Helen, GA..sometimes the food is good.. PatS.... Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 Tim, hope you stay high and dry...the Georgia floods are tops in our news stories at the moment, along with our own September heat wave. I'll take the heat. The 30 below will be along soon enough Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 23, 2009 Author Report Posted September 23, 2009 Thanks Pat..we had a heck of a downpour the other night...had not rained like this in I can't remember how long...lots of the lower areas have swollen creeks running across roads..city drainage not capable of voiding the area fast enough to match the rainfall and of course you always have folks that just have to be beside the river... In Charleston SC, I lived a bit out of town in the burbs so to speak..rain and high tide there..city got flooded everytime...I proposed to the city as a possible increase in tourist dollars to give scuba diving lessons to tourist during inclimate weather..the cops started following my car shorthy after that..so much for being an "idea" man... Quote
47heaven Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 Man, we could sure use SOME of that rain out here in So.Cal. Weather forecasts predict 105-107 through this Saturday, and it seems like they are right on target, so far. No brush fires near me because most of the brush burned in 2002-2003. Quote
RobertKB Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 As Pat said, the Georgia flooding is big news in Canada. We are having our July in September. Supposed to be 90+F here today and tomorrow and cool off a bit later in the week but still be nice. Tim, sure hope you stay high and dry! You indicated earlier that your were the second highest point in your county. Was that by choice or luck? Anyway, take care! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 23, 2009 Author Report Posted September 23, 2009 (edited) Robert...a bit of divine intervention I think..I was here newly assigned to my job..had two months expenses to buy a house..30 days in I had to pull my contract on a place due to hazmat discovered...flood hit..this area was the only accessable area around...was looking at two others when this place go a distress sale slash in price..right place at the right time so to speak..here is a pic..trees block most of the view..but its a 100 year old farm shoue in a rural community..very quiet here..I had pre approval on a loan..found the house on Friday..submitted an offer, was countered Monday..I countered that evening...closed that Friday evening..went to reserves weekend duty..went in to the base Sunday morning, begged off for the day..oh yeah..got married that same Sunday afternoon..Sal got 4 hours notice..preacher got almost 5 hour heads-up..her folks were over 100 miles away..her sister found her dad on number 6 fairway and got them all to Charleston in time for the wedding..my best bud was late to his mothers b-day party so to attend..I outpaced a hemi that week.. trees kinda hiding the place some...The 100 foot of shop attached across the back I added shortly after getting here..Sal flipped the trusses while I placed and nailed them..she did not like doing the roof... RobertKB Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 Quite the story and quite the weekend. Sometimes you just get lucky. Looks like a gorgeous property and adding the big garage is always a plus for car guys. Thanks for the interesting story. Quote
james curl Posted September 23, 2009 Report Posted September 23, 2009 You just gatta love them old houses, no one in their right mind would want one, mine is much newer, built in 21. They never need any maintainance to speak of do they. How do you ever find time to do both, work on many cars and keep the house and grounds up? I've got two old vehicles and this old house and I am retired and still run behind. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 23, 2009 Author Report Posted September 23, 2009 if life was a racetrack, I am so far behind right now I am about to lap my own butt for the 11th time... the latest house remodel has set me back time wise about 9 months from the shop...but hey...fall is around the corner..I am putting the tools away and clearing the clutter now...even worked in the shop last night from about 11:30 pm to about 3:00 am catnapped, up at 5 and off to work..did a bit of drilling and tapping to put spinner on teh wheels I quired at the swap meet for the 47 Bz. Cp. and repairing of my air line leak..finially got out there in the still of late night and heard where the leak was..went to shut off the air valve and the seal in it was shot..so rebuilt the valve, repaired the leak (outside) where it transisitions from the ground to the shop...the compressor sits about 30 feet behind the house in another building. Plymouthy Adams Posted September 26, 2009 Author Report Posted September 26, 2009 As I drove to the BBQ place last night we crossed the river in Hawkinsville..boy was the water up..not nearly as in 94 but that was a lot of water in the (Oak-Mull-ghe) I know not how to spell it..but this is how it is pronounced..be a fast ride in a canoe or kayak about right now.. Don Coatney Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 Tim; With all the flooding in and around Hotlanta are the water shortage issues gone? Quote
