Captain Neon Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I see that JC Whitney carries 00 battery cable assemblies, but only in black and no 00 starter cables. Is there some one that carries a full set of 00 battery cables w/ starter cable? Thanks, Quote
oldmopar Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I am pretty sure the wire companies like rhode island or ynz sell them but the price is not cheap Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 you can get the cable at Napa in the 00 size and build your own..but they are proud of that stuff..other choice may be a visit to a weld shop. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Ben, what are the lengths of the cables? I can inquire at the local Battery Warehouse who made mine. They made them to match lengths of the old ones I brought in. As I recall, the cost was around $35 for the set. Quote
randroid Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Bob, I measured the cables on my '48 P-15 and all three are 16", so when I replace them I'll probably go 18" to ensure wiggle room. -Randy Quote

Captain Neon Posted September 7, 2009 Author Report Posted September 7, 2009 18" black 18" starter cable 36" red While, yes, red is "hot" and black is ground. I use the 12v standard of red to pos. and black to neg. if I ever have help in the shop or the road while trying to charge or jumpstart. Thank you, Quote

Better than the 4 ga. I am currently using, but 00 carries more current and I've read good things about 00 on this forum. I would also prefer to avoid cloth covered as they soak up oil, water, and other road scum and deteriorate too quickly. Also, Atlas is very proud of their parts. I'm pretty sure that I can get a set for less than that. JC Whitney charges $23 for their black 00 battery cable assemblies so over $80 for a starter cable is a bit rich. Quote
greg g Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Sheesh, what are those made out of unobtainium. 150 bucks for cables just sublime......... But now we know the price of correctness. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Went out in the garage a bit ago and measured my cables.....all of which are black. Would need to inquire if the store has red. My ground to the head is 16" long......actually could be an inch or two shorter. However, the parts manual lists that one as 24". I think it was actually routed under the generator, originally. I just go in a straight line. Battery neg to my solenoid.......13". Book says 16". Solenoid to starter, about 16". I actually have a fourth cable to be able to go from solenoid to battery cutoff switch on the firewall. On right in picture. Quote
TodFitch Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 18" black18" starter cable 36" red While, yes, red is "hot" and black is ground. Thank you, Got me wondering, on the older cars like my 1933 the battery cables were black. I guess on some the ground cable might have just been a woven metal strap. But in any case the cables were not red. The earliest family car for which I have strong recollections, a 1963 Plymouth, had red and black battery cables. Anyone know when red started being used for the positive cables? Maybe when 12v came in? Quote
Captain Neon Posted September 7, 2009 Author Report Posted September 7, 2009 My red positive ground cable connects to a bolt that mounts the generator bracket to the engine block. The extra inches are wiggle room. The oldest cable, and the one most needing replacement, is the starter cable. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Ben 00 is nice but not needed. OEM spec is 1gauge. My car and truck both start and run fine with new 1gauge cables installed. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 The only reason I got 00 gauge for mine......the store only had ends for that size when I wanted new cables. So, I said.....what the heck, go for it. They are kinda tough to manipulate due to their size. I think 0 would really be sufficient. I ran on some skinny 12 volt cables for many years and things still worked OK. Quote
Captain Neon Posted September 8, 2009 Author Report Posted September 8, 2009 I'm not really having any troubles with the cables that I've got. I was having issues this weekend getting her to start, however. She had been sitting neglected since Memorial Day. After cleaning all of my connections, thinking I had a bad ground, I finally got a new battery and then she started right up. My "old" battery wasn't holding a charge. The whole process got me thinking that it may be wise to upgrade. On a side note, I changed out my shocks on all four corners. My old shocks were so worn, I really didn't have any shocks. It made a big difference, almost like riding a Cadillac now. LOL I did put in air shocks in the back so I can haul shine with Don and Tim , but they may not have been necessary. I soaked all four corners with PB Blaster for three days and everything came apart easily. I sprayed the mounting bolts with a little WD40 to help them go back together easy, and maybe to reduce future rust. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 I know alot of guys here won't buy stuff at Andy B's but I bought a set of cables there almost two years ago and they work great. They have the starter cable, positive and negative cables there for $46.00 altogether. Tom Quote
Captain Neon Posted September 8, 2009 Author Report Posted September 8, 2009 Do you happen to know what gauge your cables are? Quote
