48mirage Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 Still looking at the idea of a 230 with auto. I know about the plate between the engine and tranny on the tugs. I saw this *bay listing but waited until it expired to bring this up. I asked the seller if there was a plate between the tranny and engine and he answered no. Cast iron bell housing mounted directly to engine. I also asked for some ID of the engine but he couldn't provide it. Could the early 3 speed transmissions have been available? Is this a pushbutton auto? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=180371060540 Quote
dezeldoc Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 I have one with a aluminum bellhousing and the plate between the bell and block. also has a air cooled torque converter on it, i have a trans out of another car that fits. I will see if i can grab some pics for ya, it will be later as it is 106 outside right now! Quote
Captain Neon Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 The '56 Dodge that provided my P15's L6 was equipped with a pushbutton automatic tranny. If memory serves me correctly, it's been almost nine years, the bellhousing is different, but, yes, there is an automatic transmission that will work w/ an L6. Quote
old woolie Posted June 27, 2009 Report Posted June 27, 2009 (edited) The 2 speed pushbutton powerflites were mated to the flatties, but I don't think the 3 speed tourqueflites were. Edited June 28, 2009 by old woolie Quote
grey beard Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 What I'd like to learn about is the possiblilty of mating a GM 70-R4 four speed automatic to our L6 engines. This tranny has become the all-time favorite for street rodders because of two nice features. It has nearly the lowest ratio first gear of any automatic gear box plus it also has a nice hefty overdrive with a lockup convertor, with the rest of the ratios nicely spaced just like you'd like 'em. They are available with no electronic control, so they'd work with even my 6-volt system. I realize some machine shop thinking would be required to mate the convertor to our existing flywheel, but it surely would make a nice combination for keeping up with trafric and would be a more elegant way to get a higher gear ratio at the back wheels than simply adding overdrive as per stock. billwillard Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 You will need 12 volts to lock up the conv. Wilcox makes a kit with everything you need to to hook a 700r4 to your l6. Quote
Frank Elder Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 (edited) Why wouldn't you keep it mopar and go with an early A-518 overdrive? At least I think that is the correct nomenclature.... Edited June 28, 2009 by FRANKIE47 not sure Quote
grey beard Posted June 28, 2009 Report Posted June 28, 2009 Bill Willard, Please tell me more about Wilcox. Do they have a web site? Thanks Quote

Very good question, one I have asked many times, there is a guy on here that makes the adaptor for this. Edited June 29, 2009 by old woolie Quote
knuckleharley Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Why wouldn't you keep it mopar and go with an early A-518 overdrive? At least I think that is the correct nomenclature.... Because the Mopar aod's are basically a piece of ****. And that's being charitable. Quote
old woolie Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Because the Mopar aod's are basically a piece of ****. And that's being charitable. Can't agree with that, I've had great luck with them. That is my opinion of most gm stuff though. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 (edited) I'm with old woolie on this...maybe it is because you don't know that the folks at mopar made an error on the dipsticks..they say use the wrong oil which in fact did lead to premature failures...if use of correct fluid one should never have a problem...I have over 240,000 miles on two that have never even been serviced and both have seen served as tow platforms for large boats and car trailers...even the GM owners that have rode with me on a tow job remarked that their GM would be in and out of OD like you read about..and that is true as I have rode in their trucks....that would drive me silly in their absurd performance. Also I was towing up a grade with 5000 pounds behind me and some stupid little Honda Ridgeline was tring to go around...(no load, no trialer no passenger in vehicle)..I bet he was in and out of OD about 5 times before the even made it to my front bumper...another POS in my opinion...now granted I am referring to the hydraulic shifted units not the later all electronic models simply because I be poor boy with no money to blow on trucks..beside I would never own a truck..useless to me..the full size Ram Van and Ramchargers are as close to a truck I will have... greg g Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 That would be Honda's Hill logic circuit. Its fuzzy logic at best. and a pretty good hunter at worst. My brother has a pilot with similar running gear. We drove it to Fla last feb. It was actually pretty good at pulling hills without bouncing in and out of OD. I aked my brother about it and he said he pulled the fuse on the circuit. My sister in law has a Dodge Wide body van camper ( Pleasure way) with a 360 with the aod. Pulled my daughters stuff to fla with it. It did ok on all but the steppest grads ad a shift to 3rd was necessary to keep it from hunting. My opinion on th GM set up will be developed when I start driving the Studie. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 The 1954 Plymouth Savoy I had a couple years ago had an automatic with the six......original item. As to how it joined the engine......I don't have any knowledge. Quote
billwillard Posted June 29, 2009 Report Posted June 29, 2009 Greg, I think you are using the 700r4. If so and it hunts get a lock up kit from Bowtie overdrives. A lot of info & works great. Look them up on the internet. Bill Quote
