knuckleharley Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 I know a Deusenburg is not a mopar, but at sometime Fred or Auggie must have at least said the name "Chrysler", and thats enough connection for me. Me,too. Same with the Auburn and the Cord. If there has ever been any prettier cars built anywhere in the world at any time in history,I sure haven't seen them. If any of you have never been and get the chance,you owe it to yourselves to visit the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum in Indiana. When I was there a few years ago the first car you saw when entering the showroom was a Cord cabriolet that is so beautiful it will make your jaw drop,and that had maroon paint so deep and smooth you could swim in it. Once you get over the shock of that,you start to notice the Auburns and Duesengergs parked all over the show room floor. I think they had it there to prepare people for the beauty of the Duesenbergs. Just suddenly rounding a corner and spotting a Duezy without warning may be more than most people could take. Yeah,I know. Everybody has seen them in photos and in movies. It ain't the same thing. Trust me on this one. BTW,one of the most fun parts of the museum to me was sitting on a couch by the door and watching the expressions on the faces of the visitors as they came in and spotted that Cord. It wasn't just me,everybody that came in just stood there for a second with their mouths hung open in shock. The day I was there there were people signing the guest book from Germany and Japan. Quote

Last year an elderly gentleman acting as a docent walked with my wife and I through the first floor showroom. He asked me what my favorite was and I said, standing in front of a deusy sedan, "that one". I asked what his was and he said "its on the second floor" So we went to see it. A 1929 Deusenberg factory bodied four door sedan. He talked for quite a while and I was just fascinated. It seems he worked at the assembly factory in Indianapolis driving new Deusys off the line onto a field to await delivery. As soon as he could affort to, he bought one. The very one we were standing in front of. It is untouched, unrestored, and even has two of its original tires, both being used as sidemount spares right now. He said they dont do anything to it because it is their "standard" to restore others by. A wonderful old man in his 90's. I should have written down his name. I think he said he got 15 cents a car to drive them off the line, and when it rained, they would pull them with mules. Sorry for the post, but the old guy is, or was a real library of info. Quote

It still has two of the original tires on it,and tires just didn't last that long back then. Yeah,I'd love to have one just to look at. Hell,I'd try to figure out a way to park it inside the house so I could look at it all the time,but I'd still want to drive it. BTW,I had a older guy walk around the museum with me,too. He or his father had the closest Dodge dealership in 1935,and he has found and restored the first 1935 Dodge they ever sold. Quote

The two original tires are absolutely shot, but they are still on their wheels. There is a cushion on the front seat he said was for his back. The idea of standing next to it with the original owner was a bit of a thrill. Quote

A 56 D-500 was the first car to break 100mph in the 1/4 mile Super stock at 102mph. And that was using only two gears of three 2nd and 3rd. Quote
