Joe Flanagan Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Tomorrow I go pick up my newly stripped gas tank. I wanted to ask if anyone had any advice on the best way to do an air test for leaks. I know about using soapy water on the exterior, but what's the best way to seal the openings and what would you use as an air source (assuming a compressor is too strong). I was going to use duct tape to seal the top hole and the filler neck and then maybe force air in somehow through the inlet for the fuel line. Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Joe; If you have a shop vacuum you can connect the hose from the shop vacuum exhaust to the inlet fuel neck on the gas tank. That should put enough pressure in your tank to check for leaks. Once you have it pressurized light up a cheap cigar and give it the smoke test to check for leaks. Quote
aero3113 Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 you should try to put a pressure gauge on it and set up a valve so the air will stay in the tank, put pressure in it let it sit and check the gauge. If it reads the same when you left it its good to go. Quote
p10plymouth Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 First I would try to find a radiator shop they have dip tanks for this purpose! I am sure it will cost under 20 .. My guy would do it for free (hoping for a small repair out of it) Secound you can use a radiator hand pump .. seal all the holes make a seal and use kids bubbbles around all joints etc etc.. Gasoline etches the inside of the tanks I had mine done by renue lifetime warranty .. Got to think Spring! DANiel Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 8, 2009 Author Report Posted January 8, 2009 Don: You mean light two cheap cigars because I'm going to make sure Rodney Bullock is with me for the big test. I'll post pictures afterwards. Quote

Young Ed Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 But Don don't you blow smoke naturally? Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 But Don don't you blow smoke naturally? Young Ed; You are starting to sound like Norms Coupe:mad: I dont blow smoke naturally but I do pass gas (sometimes very large amounts) naturally:eek: Did I mention I will be coming to Minieapolis (that is the small version of Minneapolis) in February? I will be ready to give you a demonstration on my gas passing at that time. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Come on Don was that comparison to Norm's coupe really necessary? No gas passing allowed in MN in February-you'll learn its too cold to be trapped indoors with that. One of my grade school teacher had a saying for us when we complained the science lab was stinky. He said" you can freeze to death or die of the stinko" It was then our choice to open a window or not. Quote

Not true Ed, Don and Ed, okay Normscoupe too, eat beans, America needs the gas, good to run the furnace with up north in the states, saves on the natural type gas, hey wait a minute this is the natrual stuff, for more xotic southwestern gas, eat refried beans, then do a gastank leak test with his gas, careful with the cheap cigars though. Quote
busycoupe Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 I would be cautious about using a cigar or anything burning near a gas tank. Just how well was it flushed out when stripped? Even faint fumes of old gas may be enough to make a sealed tank into a bomb. The shopvac or radiator test pump would be my choice. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 8, 2009 Author Report Posted January 8, 2009 I thought that was the point of Don's post, kind of like telling someone to use a match to look in the gas tank and see how much is in there. I saw a video recently of someone lighting his own gas with one of those Bic cigarette lighters and I thought his whole crotch was going to go up in smoke. Don, I suppose you would wait until you were comfortably established in Young Ed's living room before you performed your gas-passing demonstration. What's that fish that's real popular in Minnesota? Maybe you should have a big plate of that first. I guess we're officially OT. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Joe are you thinking of walleye? Here's a 2 story tall one at the fishing museum in hayward wi. Taken during the first fall tour I drove my own old car on. Quote
RobertKB Posted January 8, 2009 Report Posted January 8, 2009 Young Ed;I dont blow smoke naturally but I do pass gas (sometimes very large amounts) naturally:eek: As we are now officially off topic, I can attest as a teenager some friends and I found out that "natural" gas does light! I'm sure many of you have had the same experience. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 I had a buddy called "Blue Flame" and not because he had a Chevy six. Quote
Frank Elder Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 I think you mean that stinky norway treat, ludefisk naturaly dried and salted codfish packed in fish oil:eek:  Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 That's a Musky (Muskellunge), not a Walleye. Joe are you thinking of walleye? Here's a 2 story tall one at the fishing museum in hayward wi. Taken during the first fall tour I drove my own old car on. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 Ok thanks Merle. Its been quite a while since we were there. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 I've been past it several times but I've never stopped there for a visit. I grew up about 60 miles south of there. Merle Quote
Young Ed Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 Funny I've been there twice. Once as a child and then once on this POC fall trip. Our cabin isn't too far away from hayward either. Have you ever been to Al Capone's hideout? I believe it was in the same general area. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 I've heard of it, but never been there. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 9, 2009 Report Posted January 9, 2009 Jeez Merle you need to get out more Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted January 9, 2009 Author Report Posted January 9, 2009 Now we're OTX2. First the gas tank, then gas, then the giant muskie in Wisconsin. And yes, Frankie47, it was ludefisk I was thinking of. But gefilte fish is probably worse. Ever seen that stuff? Why they sell it glass jars I have no idea. Quote
Frank Elder Posted January 10, 2009 Report Posted January 10, 2009 Worked at the Rose Blumpkin Jewish retirement home in the maintenance dept. GA-fell-TA fish is rather aromatic, but rather than the smell being the reason it is in jars, Kosher plays a big role in its container of choice, but once it's on the plate:eek:  Slimey! Quote
