Dennis Hemingway Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 The news just said that the Airport in Las Vegas is closed due to snow. Yhey don't have snow removal equipment. They say that this is going to contiue thru Thrusday and they don't know when they will have the roads open. Dennis:D Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 When was the last time you Californians had this much snow? I've been in this house for 32 years and do not remember it ever snowing this much. And it's still snowing. dezeldoc Is at a little higher Elev than we are. Dennis:eek: Quote
dezeldoc Posted December 18, 2008 Author Report Posted December 18, 2008 When was the last time you Californians had this much snow? 1995 was the last time we had this much and it hung around for a week, part I hate is the slop when it thaws. Quote
Reg Evans Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 We had about 6" of the white stuff here Sunday night at the 2200' elevation . I couldn't take a shower until noon today due to a frozen water main from the well. What's the elevation in Lancaster dezeldoc ? This global warming thing is giving me chills. Quote
PatS.... Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 Well, for you in California, at least you don't have the wonderful million below zero temps and the cozy blowing north gale with no end in sight. Oh, and our airport is open, just a little delayed We are at 3736 (feet) here 80 miles east of the Rockies. Few watermain leaks here at this temp. They will freeze and break, but the time they leak or gush is when it warms up and the water starts flowing again. There was one burst pipe here on the roof of an apartment building which had to be evacuated because of the weight of the frozen water on the roof. They said the damage may be severe. http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20081217/CGY_Evacuate_Water_081217/20081217/?hub=CalgaryHome Quote
dezeldoc Posted December 18, 2008 Author Report Posted December 18, 2008 we are at 2200 and some change. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 Wow, all my dreams have come true. Now we all have had the blanket. I don't think you guy's are hurtin. Quote
brian hood Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 TOday, in South Alabama, the temp is expected to reach 80. I love it! Quote
Normspeed Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 There's a big storm system coming east from CA expected to hit us today. Might see a little snow. We're at 4000 feet or so. Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 Normspeed, Get ready we have about 6" here in Barstow this morning. All roads in & out are still closed. Dennis:eek: Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 We had about 6" of the white stuff here Sunday night at the 2200' elevation . I couldn't take a shower until noon today due to a frozen water main from the well. What's the elevation in Lancaster dezeldoc ? This global warming thing is giving me chills. Reg, get that line deeper in the ground, and where it comes up, if the are is not heated use heat tape. It goes down to -35 here and never do I have a frozen well line, or septic line, cuz everything is below the frost line..........Fred Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 Dennis you have darn near what we have for snow, a way up north from you guys, mid you i't a lot colder here, than in you area. Has this ever happened before, I di not think you got snow in Southern Cal, only up high in the mountains...........Fred Quote
dezeldoc Posted December 18, 2008 Author Report Posted December 18, 2008 Well they said it broke a 1974 record for snow fall, 10+ ".. Heck I would not mind this a couple times a year. Tomorow morning is going to be bad, with all the snow melting today it will freeze tonight and the idiots will drive like it is a clear road with no thought of black ice. this outta be fun!! Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 Hmmm.........now where did I put that violin?? That little bit of snow doesn't stop us. We are supposed to get about a foot of snow between midnight and 3 PM tomorrow. If we do it will put us up to about 30 inches for the month so far. However, it won't close the roads. Quote
dezeldoc Posted December 19, 2008 Author Report Posted December 19, 2008 If we get an inch around here all hell breaks loose and everything gets shut down!! You know us cali people don't get no 4 seasons so everyone drives the same as they do when it is 80*. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 Hmmm.........now where did I put that violin?? . Norm..forget the violin...better know where the gas for the snow blower is sitting..running AC yesterday...I mulched the leaves in the yard and orchard for the year...the cotton is harvested and I have picked up the stay bits along the property that abutts to the road ..that is about the only white I see during the winter.. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 I think there was at least a foot of snow in my driveway this morning, and it's still coming down heavy. It's also blowing and drifting quite a lot. All schools are closed and they're warning everyone to stay home if you can. Traffic was light coming in to work this morning. The plows are out, but they can't keep up with it, so if you get to a section where they have just come through it's not too bad. If they haven't been through recently there's a fair amount of snow to drive through. It's really not that bad to drive in if you take it easy, and have a 4WD . Merle Quote
55 Fargo Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 Norm, have only used the snow blower once this year, and really didn't need too use it, as there is very little snow. I have used the broom mostly for the side walks at my place, we are to get about 1 inch or so today and maybe 1 inch over night. I think you guys along the Great Lakes get more snow than us, we get colder weather though.............Fred ps we might have 6 to 10 inches for the year total snowfall Quote
Young Ed Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 Fred the twin cities is predicted to have 75 inches this season. I'm starting to believe that will happen with how frequently its been snowing this month. I think the average is 50-60. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 Milwaukee's record winter snow fall was set back in the winter of 1885-86 with 109.8" of snow through the full winter season. Last winter we came up about a foot short of matching that record at 96.7", officially at the airport. So far this December we are ahead of last year's snow fall. Only time will tell what will happen through the rest of the winter. However, I also know that what we get pales in comparison to what Greg, Shel, and the others get up in northern NY, off the shore of Lakes Erie and Ontario, or up in the U.P. of Michigan along Lake Superior. Those areas can get 3 or 4 feet of snow in one storm. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 19, 2008 Report Posted December 19, 2008 Norm..forget the violin...better know where the gas for the snow blower is sitting..running AC yesterday...I mulched the leaves in the yard and orchard for the year...the cotton is harvested and I have picked up the stay bits along the property that abutts to the road ..that is about the only white I see during the winter.. Tim, I'm still looking for that violin. :D No need to check gas for the snow blower. Have about 4 gallons in the can in the garage. Always keep plenty around so I don't have to run out and get it during a storm. However, I heard a plow going about an hour ago. Looked out the living room window and didn't see one. But.............my driveway was all plowed out. My neighbor evidently did it when he plowed his. :D It's nice to have good neighbors. Even so, I've already used the new blower about 4 or 5 times that I bought last April. It works great even in the heavy wet stuff. Just put it in gear and take a leisurely walk behind it. No strain at all and the snow is gone. Quote
